GTA 6 release clash: Fable and Squadron 42 moved to 2027

Since March 2025, publishers have said privately that they would steer clear of GTA 6. In 2026, two games planned for the fall did it: Fable moved to February 2027, and Squadron 42 named GTA 6 as the reason for its delay.

Two games planned for fall 2026 left their dates because of GTA 6, which launches November 19, 2026. Fable moved from October 2026 to February 23, 2027, with director Ralph Fulton saying on August 27, 2026 that there was one game he was happy to avoid. Squadron 42 slipped from Q4 2026 to Q2 2027, and Chris Roberts named GTA 6 in his letter.

Two games due in fall 2026 have left their dates because of Grand Theft Auto VI. Playground Games’ Fable moved from October 2026 to February 23, 2027, and Cloud Imperium Games’ Squadron 42 slipped from Q4 2026 to Q2 2027. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and with 27 days to go, the November 19 date is holding.

Game Publisher Planned Now GTA 6 named?
Fable Xbox October 2026 February 23, 2027 implied by its director, August 27, 2026
Squadron 42 Cloud Imperium Games Q4 2026 Q2 2027 yes, August 27, 2026
Crymelight Furyu Games November 5, 2026 November 5, 2026, kept yes, June 5, 2026, as a dare

Fable lands 96 days after GTA 6. The table only counts moves that a publisher or an established outlet ties to GTA 6. Valor Mortis, which went from September to October 13, 2026, is left out: its studio blamed a crowded September and never mentioned Rockstar.

Fable: Xbox stayed vague, its director less so

On May 29, 2026, Xbox announced on X that Fable was moving to February 2027: “In order to plan our game launches through the holidays, we’re moving Fable to February 2027 so it can have the dedicated moment it deserves.” The post did not name GTA 6. The list of the year’s releases Xbox posted with it did.

At Gamescom, director Ralph Fulton told IGN on August 27, 2026 that Fable had been aiming for October, and that “the rationale behind moving us out of October, the date that we were in previously, is pretty apparent to everybody.” Then the line PC Gamer read as a reference to GTA 6:

“We don’t run scared of other big games. We’re a big game ourselves. […] There’s just one that I’m happy to avoid entirely.”

Squadron 42: the only one to write the name

Chris Roberts is the only studio head to cite GTA 6 by name for a delay. In a letter on the Roberts Space Industries site, picked up by PC Gamer on August 27, 2026, he said Squadron 42, first announced for 2015, would miss its planned Q4 2026 release rather than launch “into the attention buzz saw of GTA 6.”

His argument is about attention, not sales. Roberts concedes that GTA 6 “isn’t launching on PC this November” (Rockstar has given no PC date), but says “pretty much all outlets and most content creators will be all over it.”

What publishers were saying in March 2025

GTA 6 was then due in late 2025. On March 25, 2025, Christopher Dring reported in The Game Business that three major publishers were ready to delay their games. One boss said Rockstar games “suck a lot of money and, more importantly, time out of the market.” Two developers of Top 10 live-service games planned no major updates during the launch window:

“GTA 6 is basically a huge meteor and we will just stay clear of the blast zone.”

The same studio boss planned to “nudge our releases back or forward three weeks.” EA’s Andrew Wilson followed that logic after GTA 6’s first delay, VGC reported on May 7, 2025: without naming it, he said Battlefield’s window was “clearer than it was before.”

Not everyone ran. Furyu Games kept its roguelike Crymelight on November 5, 2026, and posted on X on June 5: “Maybe we’re just not afraid enough.” According to PC Gamer, Devolver Digital even moved an unannounced game to land on the same day as GTA 6.
