GTA 6 at The Game Awards 2026: 21 days from launch to the show

GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026, three weeks before The Game Awards on December 10. Games must be on sale by Friday, November 20 at 9 p.m. PT to qualify, which gives GTA 6 one day to spare.

: The show has now published its eligibility cutoff: November 20, 2026 at 9 p.m. PT, one day after GTA 6 launches.

The Game Awards 2026 takes place Thursday, December 10, 2026 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, 21 days after GTA 6 launches on November 19. Any game on sale by Friday, November 20, 2026 at 9 p.m. PT is eligible, per the official FAQ as read on October 15, 2026, so GTA 6 makes the cutoff with one day to spare.

Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and The Game Awards 2026 streams live on Thursday, December 10 from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, according to the show’s official FAQ as read on September 27, 2026. That leaves 21 days between launch and the ceremony. The stream is free, with the opening act at 7:30 p.m. ET, 4:30 p.m. PT.

The eligibility cutoff

The FAQ rule is short: “any game available for public consumption by the deadline is eligible for potential nomination.” There is no submission form and no fee; every game is in the running automatically.

The 2026 cutoff is now in the FAQ, as read on October 15, 2026: “Games must be made commercially available to customers on or before Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. PT.” GTA 6 goes on sale the day before. The fan-voted Players’ Voice category takes games that “ship on or before November 30, 2026.”

That date matches the pattern Screen Rant described on December 13, 2025, when it put the 2025 cutoff on Friday, November 21 and called it “typically the third Friday in November.”

How the jury votes

Nominees in most categories come from “an international jury of over 100 global media and influencer outlets.” Each outlet files a confidential ballot with its top five per category, and the five most-cited games are nominated. Winners are decided by a blended vote, 90% jury and 10% fans, with fan voting closing December 9 at 6 p.m. PT. Producer Geoff Keighley does not vote.

The ballot deadline is the tighter squeeze. In 2025, per Screen Rant, outlets voted on November 4 and nominees were announced November 17, 24 days before the December 11 show that Deadline reported.

Year Nominees announced Ceremony Gap
2018 November 13, 2018 December 6, 2018 23 days
2025 November 17, 2025 December 11, 2025 24 days
2026 to be announced December 10, 2026

The same gap would put the 2026 nominations around November 16, three days before GTA 6 is out. Jurors would then need an early copy: the FAQ lets publishers provide “advance or pre-release access to games for critical evaluation” to meet balloting deadlines. Rockstar Games has said nothing about sending one, or about when the review embargo lifts.

The Red Dead Redemption 2 precedent

Rockstar has run this clock before. Red Dead Redemption 2 launched October 26, 2018, and 18 days later, on November 13, Variety reported it tied with God of War for the most nominations at eight each.

At the Microsoft Theater on December 6, 2018, the western won four awards: Best Narrative, Best Score/Music for Woody Jackson, Best Audio Design, and Best Performance for Roger Clark as Arthur Morgan. Game of the Year went to God of War. The show’s own recap still calls Red Dead Redemption 2 “the night’s most awarded game.”

GTA 6 gets 21 days between launch and the ceremony, 20 fewer than the 41 Red Dead Redemption 2 had in 2018.
