GTA 6 launch earns US soldiers a four-day pass, if they reenlist

The November 19, 2026 release date has turned into a retention tool. An Army engineer battalion in Georgia is trading four days of leave for a new contract, timed to the launch.

The 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion at Fort Stewart, Georgia, is giving a four-day pass to soldiers who reenlist between August 1 and November 14, 2026, with the days timed to the November 19 release of GTA 6. Task & Purpose published the memo, signed by Lt. Col. Ryan Hodgson, on August 18, 2026. Twenty of the battalion's 130 eligible soldiers had signed by then.

An Army engineer battalion is offering four days of leave to soldiers who sign a new contract between August 1 and November 14, 2026, with the days set aside for the November 19 release of Grand Theft Auto VI. Task & Purpose reporter Patty Nieberg published the memo, signed by 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion commander Lt. Col. Ryan Hodgson at Fort Stewart, Georgia, on August 18, 2026.

The memo names the game outright. Soldiers get “a special 4-day pass” that is “specifically designated to coincide with the highly anticipated release of the video game ‘Grand Theft Auto VI’”, with the exact days worked out between the soldier and the chain of command.

Contracts run from two to six years, and every soldier in the battalion qualifies, from engineering and signal intelligence through human resources and medical. As of the Monday before Task & Purpose ran the story, 20 of the 130 eligible soldiers had taken the offer. An Army official gave the site the reasoning:

The command team, in conjunction with the career counselor, wanted to get soldiers excited to reenlist.

The pitch exists because the money does not. Battalion commanders cannot reach for the cash bonuses the Army hands out nationally, Task & Purpose reports, so they improvise: extra schooling, incentives tied to fitness scores, sealed bids in which junior soldiers name the lowest monthly bonus they would accept for six more years.

The two calendars do not quite line up. November 14 falls five days before the November 19 launch and two days after digital preloading opens on November 12, 2026, the date Take-Two set in its June 24, 2026 pre-order release. Sign on the last eligible day and the download is ready before the leave is.

One thing the memo leaves open is when those four days actually start. Rockstar Games has never published an unlock time for November 19, in any region, and none of the hour-by-hour charts circulating online come from the Newswire. The battalion booked its pass against a date, not a clock.
