GTA 6 day one patch: Rockstar shipped 3.3GB for Red Dead 2

Rockstar Games put out a 3.30GB Launch Day Title Update the day before Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped in October 2018. GTA 6 comes with a download code in the box, so every buyer goes through the store this time.

Rockstar Games shipped a Launch Day Title Update for Red Dead Redemption 2 weighing 3.30GB on PlayStation 4 and 3.20GB on Xbox One, released on October 25, 2018, one day before the game. The studio told players to download it before launching. For GTA 6, preload opens November 12, 2026, seven days before release, the same gap Rockstar used in 2018.

The closest thing to a GTA 6 day one patch on record is the one Rockstar Games shipped for Red Dead Redemption 2: 3.30GB on PlayStation 4, 3.20GB on Xbox One, posted on October 25, 2018, the day before the game reached shelves. GamesRadar+ and Wccftech both published the same figures that day.

Rockstar’s own wording, as Wccftech quoted it, ran to two sentences:

“The Day-One Title Update includes a range of across-the-board improvements and bug fixes for optimal performance. We strongly recommend making sure you have downloaded the Title Update before launching the game, to ensure the best possible gameplay experience.”

Booting the game without it was allowed. GamesRadar+ made that clear on October 25, 2018: the update carried “last minute tweaks, bugs and fixes” and Rockstar pushed players toward it, then left the choice alone.

The disc queue is gone this time

Two groups of buyers existed in 2018. Digital pre-orders could pull the update down before launch; anyone carrying a disc home from a store had to insert it first and download the patch afterwards, per GamesRadar+. GTA 6 removes that split at the source: the boxed version holds a download code rather than a disc, Take-Two wrote on June 24, 2026, and the box reaches shops on November 12, 2026, the day preload opens. Everyone is a store customer now, which is what the download code really costs you.

Seven days of preload, twice over

Rockstar Games posted on X on October 17, 2018: “Pre-order now on digital and begin pre-loading this Friday at 12AM ET”, picked up the same day by Push Square. That put the download window seven days ahead of the October 26 release.

Game Preload opens Release Gap
Red Dead Redemption 2 October 19, 2018, 12AM ET October 26, 2018 7 days
GTA 6 November 12, 2026 November 19, 2026 7 days

Take-Two set the identical gap for GTA 6 and gave the reason in the June 24, 2026 release: players preload “to ensure they are able to play at launch on November 19, 2026”. The Rockstar Games support page updated that same day handles boxed and digital buyers identically, which the November 12 preload guide works through platform by platform.

Free space on release night

A preloaded copy stays locked until its time zone opens. IGN reported on September 7, 2026, reading PlayStation Store timestamps, that GTA 6 unlocks at midnight local time in most countries. Any update published on release day would therefore land after that moment, on top of an install that already exists, rather than during the preload week.

Rockstar Games has not published the download size for GTA 6, the weight of any launch update or its release notes, as of September 17, 2026. The 3.30GB figure from 2018 records what the studio once shipped on a release day, and it sets an order of magnitude rather than a forecast. The number worth working out before November 12 is the install itself, so leave headroom on top of the storage GTA 6 needs.

One more detail from that October 25, 2018 Newswire post: it also carried the lift times for the live-streaming embargo, GamesRadar+ noted. A single article held every practical launch instruction Rockstar had left to give, which is the kind of post the November 19 release calendar tracks for GTA 6.
