GTA 6 publisher Take-Two: who owns Rockstar, and since when

Take-Two Interactive has owned Rockstar Games since the studio was founded in December 1998. Its fiscal year runs April to March, and the one ending March 31, 2027 is guided to jump from $6.72 billion to over $8 billion on GTA 6.

Take-Two Interactive is the New York publisher that owns Rockstar Games, founded as its subsidiary in December 1998. It also publishes under the 2K and Zynga labels. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026, inside Take-Two's fiscal 2027, which ends March 31, 2027 and is guided at $8.0 to $8.2 billion in net bookings, up from $6.72 billion the year before. Strauss Zelnick has run the company since 2007.

Take-Two Interactive is the New York publisher that owns Rockstar Games, the studio releasing Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar makes the game; Take-Two funds it and answers for it to shareholders, on the Nasdaq under the ticker TTWO.

The tie goes back to day one: Rockstar Games was founded in December 1998 by Sam Houser, Dan Houser, Terry Donovan, Gary Foreman and Jamie King as a Take-Two subsidiary. Take-Two now counts 10 in-house Rockstar studios, Rockstar North in Edinburgh among them.

Three labels, and the sales behind them

Take-Two says it publishes “principally through Rockstar Games, 2K, and Zynga”, in the boilerplate that closes every earnings release. Its investor decks put lifetime numbers on the catalogue:

Series Lifetime units As of
Grand Theft Auto, whole series over 470 million May 2026
Grand Theft Auto V over 230 million August 7, 2026
NBA 2K nearly 173 million May 2026
Borderlands 100 million May 2026
Red Dead Redemption 2 over 87 million August 7, 2026
Civilization over 80 million May 2026

Most of the money comes from games that keep selling after launch. In the April to June 2026 quarter, recurrent consumer spending (virtual currency, add-on content, in-game purchases) made up 84% of net bookings, the sales metric Take-Two leads with. GTA 6 starts on a different footing: at the September 17, 2026 shareholder meeting, Strauss Zelnick called it a single-player launch with “no recurrent consumer spending anticipated with regard to this launch.”

A fiscal year that ends March 31

Take-Two’s year runs April through March, so GTA 6 lands in fiscal 2027, ending March 31, 2027. The company guides $8.0 to $8.2 billion in net bookings for that year and ties the growth directly to the November 19 launch. Fiscal 2026 closed at $6.72 billion, which makes the step up $1.28 to $1.48 billion, or 19% to 22% (GTA6 LIFE calculation from the two releases).

Fiscal 2027 quarter Period Status
Q1 April to June 2026 reported August 7, 2026: $1.39 billion in net bookings
Q2 July to September 2026 guided at $1.62 to $1.67 billion, with a net loss of $140 to $157 million; results due November 9, 2026
Q3 October to December 2026 first quarter with GTA 6 on sale
Q4 January to March 2027 fiscal year closes March 31, 2027

Q2 closed on September 30, 2026, the last quarter before the game. On October 13, 2026, Take-Two announced it will report the quarter after the market close on Monday, November 9, 2026, ten days before launch, with a conference call at 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time. A year earlier, the matching report came out on November 6, 2025, the same day Rockstar pushed GTA 6 to November 19, 2026. Take-Two does not break out net bookings by title, so every GTA 6 sales forecast comes from analysts, as does the development budget figure.

Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO, has led the company since 2007. On September 17, 2026, he dated his team’s arrival to March 2007, with the stock at $17, and put its gain since at about 1,200%. Investing.com valued Take-Two at $44.3 billion on August 28, 2026.
