GTA 6 release date and launch time: what Rockstar has not said

Grand Theft Auto VI launches on Thursday, November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with preload opening on November 12. The hour the game actually unlocks has never been published by Rockstar Games.

Grand Theft Auto VI launches on Thursday, November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That is the date Rockstar Games published on the Newswire on November 6, 2025, the one Take-Two has carried in its results line-up since February 3, 2026, and the one rockstargames.com/VI still displayed on August 28, 2026 under the line “Coming November 19, 2026”. What the studio has never published is an hour.

The only timed step in the whole launch calendar concerns preload. It opens on November 12, 2026, seven days ahead of release, so that buyers “are able to play at launch on November 19, 2026”, according to Take-Two’s pre-order announcement of June 24, 2026. The same text states that the retail box holds a download code rather than a disc, and that it reaches shelves on November 12 to support that preload.

Date What happens
June 25, 2026 Pre-orders opened, at midnight local time in each country
November 12, 2026 Digital preload begins, and code-in-a-box copies reach stores
November 19, 2026 Release, on a Thursday, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
November 20, 2026 Cut-off for the Vintage Vice City Pack: the purchase must precede it

Those four are the only launch dates Rockstar and Take-Two have put in writing. The last one is a purchase deadline and not a content date: the Vintage Vice City Pack comes with any order placed before November 20, 2026, pre-order or day-one buy alike.

No unlock time has been announced

Rockstar has published nothing. No Newswire post, no official storefront page and no post on X says at what hour Grand Theft Auto VI becomes playable on November 19, 2026. Three unlock schedules have been circulating for months even so, and they cannot all be right.

The first, relayed on July 19, 2026 by gtasixonline.com, claims the game unlocks at midnight local time, zone by zone, New Zealand first. The second appeared on November 8, 2025 on all-about-gta6.com and rests on a PlayStation Store listing said to read “Releases on: 11/19/2026 05:00 AM UTC”, meaning one single instant worldwide. The third, published by Guru3D on May 14, 2026, presents a regional grid attributed to Rockstar that puts the United Kingdom at 8am and the United States at 1pm. Those two hours do not describe the same instant, and neither lands at midnight.

None of the three cites the Newswire, and Rockstar has relayed none of them. The studio does announce hours when it wants to. On June 24, 2026, Take-Two wrote that pre-orders would open at midnight local time, which is why Australians started buying several hours before anyone in New York. That was for selling, not for playing.

The ambiguity is real because Rockstar has used both models before: midnight local on console, one worldwide instant for the PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2. Nothing indicates which applies this time. Here is what each would produce, as a hypothesis and nothing more.

Possible model Los Angeles New York London Sydney
Midnight local time 12am, Nov 19 12am, Nov 19 12am, Nov 19 12am, Nov 19
One instant at 05:00 UTC 9pm, Nov 18 12am, Nov 19 5am, Nov 19 4pm, Nov 19

Not one of those hours has been announced by Rockstar Games, and the second row depends on an unverified site reading a storefront field. The gap between the two rows matters most on the American West Coast, where a global unlock would land on the evening of November 18, and in Auckland, where it would fall at 6pm on November 19, well into a working day. Use them to plan an evening, not to set an alarm.

One storefront already displays November 18

The discrepancy is visible on screen. On August 28, 2026, the French PlayStation Store listings for Grand Theft Auto VI carried the line “Sortie : 18/11/2026”, while Rockstar’s own store, the Take-Two announcement and the game page all give November 19, 2026.

The cheapest explanation is an unlock timestamp expressed in a time zone that flips the previous evening, which would make that 18/11 an indirect trace of a launch hour. Sony explains it nowhere, and Rockstar has not commented. As it stands it is a listing anomaly, not a second release date.

What preload changes, and what it does not

Preloading on November 12, 2026 buys no head start. The game stays locked until the 19th, and Take-Two’s wording ties the two together: the boxed version “will be available starting November 12, 2026 to support pre-loading”. The value is the seven days of margin on the download itself, which is the whole point of the November 12 preload.

That margin has a blind spot. Rockstar has communicated no install size, on any platform, and no official storefront page displays one to date, so there is no way to work out how much storage to clear before November 12. Buyers who chose a box will discover their code on opening it, with the restrictions a download code carries.

In its August 26, 2026 statement about the unauthorized videos, Rockstar repeated the date and added no hour to it: “we hope that everyone will wait a bit longer to experience the game for themselves on November 19”. The Extended Look that followed on Netflix changed neither the date nor the platforms, and the November 19 date holds.

For that Extended Look, the studio had given a time down to the minute: 3pm ET on August 27, 2026 on Netflix, then 9pm ET on YouTube and on the GTA 6 site. For the game itself, 83 days out, no such line has been published.
