GTA 6 at 30fps on console: what was actually said, and by whom

Console versions of GTA 6 are running at 30 frames per second during this phase of development, according to Rob Nelson remarks reported on August 27, 2026. Digital Foundry measured a steady 30fps in the Extended Look.

Console builds of GTA 6 are running at 30 frames per second during this phase of development, according to remarks from Rob Nelson reported on August 27, 2026 by Brazilian creator Davy Jones on Flow Games, then carried by Kotaku and VGC. Rockstar Games has published no figure of its own: this is a recollection of a conversation, not a statement.

Console builds of Grand Theft Auto VI are running at 30 frames per second during this phase of development, according to remarks from Rob Nelson reported on August 27, 2026. The Rockstar North co-director did not put it in a press release: he said it to Davy Jones, a Brazilian creator invited to Edinburgh ahead of the Extended Look.

How the number travelled matters as much as the number. Jones wrote the exchange up in Portuguese, for the Brazilian site Flow Games. Kotaku carried it on August 27 through a machine translation, and Video Games Chronicle followed on August 28. No step in that chain adds a source: it is one person’s recollection of what was said in the room.

The Flow Games text reads:

According to Rob Nelson, Lead Developer and Co-director at Rockstar North, during this development period, the consoles are running the game at 30 frames per second. According to the director, it is still necessary to consult the technical team to determine if there will be a 60 FPS option at launch (or in the future).

The words are “during this development period”, not “at launch”. Nelson gave no resolution figure, said nothing about ray tracing, the lighting technique computed in real time, and ruled out no 60fps mode. Push Square read the remark as covering every console, PS5 Pro included.

VGC says confirmed, Push Square says targeting

VGC ran “GTA 6 is confirmed to run at 30 frames per second” on August 28. Push Square, the day before, ran “GTA 6 Targeting 30fps on PS5, Undecided on Performance Mode”. The remark is the same. The verb is not. Rockstar Games has published no frame rate: not on the Newswire, not on the product page, not on the support article updated June 24, 2026, checked on August 28, 2026.

The one measurable thing is the picture. Digital Foundry went through the 26 minutes and 48 seconds of the Extended Look on August 28, captured in game on a base PlayStation 5, and reads an internal rendering resolution of about 1440p pushed to 4K by what looks like a plain spatial upscale, a stretch rather than a rebuild of the image. On smoothness it reports a “relatively stable and well-paced 30FPS output, with only very occasional single frame drops”: 33.3 ms a frame, held, with rare isolated dips.

No graphics modes have been announced, no 40fps option either, and the “PS5 Pro Enhanced” tag on the PlayStation store page comes with no detail. At 30 frames per second, what matters in a console setup and what changes nothing on screen are not the same list.
