GTA 6: who Rob Nelson is, the man Rockstar puts forward

Rob Nelson is head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, the Edinburgh studio building GTA 6. Since August 26, 2026, he is the only person at Rockstar Games talking about the game on the record.

Rob Nelson is head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, which he has run with Aaron Garbut since Leslie Benzies went on sabbatical in September 2014. He already led the studio's 650 staff on Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018. Every GTA 6 interview Rockstar has granted since August 26, 2026 carries his name, from Dazed to Famitsu, and he finished a full playthrough of the game in February 2026 in roughly 80 hours.

Rob Nelson is head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, the Edinburgh studio building Grand Theft Auto VI, and he is the person Rockstar Games has put in front of the press since August 26, 2026. He runs the studio alongside Aaron Garbut. The game arrives November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The sourced part of his career is short. When Leslie Benzies, president of Rockstar North, went on sabbatical in September 2014, his studio head duties passed to Garbut and Nelson, “both art directors for the studio.” Benzies left Rockstar for good in January 2016.

On Red Dead Redemption 2, released October 26, 2018, Nelson led the 650 people at Rockstar North and joined production full time for the back half of the project. He described a team that was “obsessed with [the world] feeling natural or organic in every respect.”

The scouting trip comes before everything, he told TroisCouleurs on August 27, 2026: “the first thing we always do, once we decide where we want to set the game, is we’ll go there.” Florida is the pick for GTA 6, and he names the areas the team wanted in his account of how the game began, “the Everglades” and “some of these towns outside of Miami.”

What he has said about GTA 6, August 26 to September 6

Rockstar Games held no press conference for GTA 6: what the studio has said about it sits in the interviews given to outlets flown to Edinburgh in July 2026, and Nelson is on the other side of the table every time.

Date Outlet What he said
August 26, 2026 Dazed “I don’t know that any amount of external pressure could compare with the pressure we put on ourselves as a team”
August 27, 2026 IGN Four playable characters were explored before the pair, dropped over “diluting the amount of player time with each”
August 27, 2026 TroisCouleurs “The game’s been in development since 2015,” with the rest of the team arriving after 2018
August 27, 2026 New York Times His full February 2026 playthrough took about 80 hours
August 28, 2026 Famitsu A grocery shopping and fridge restocking system was built, then cut
September 3, 2026 TGG, reported by GameSpot Fishing is catch and release only: “It didn’t fit this game”
September 6, 2026 TGG, reported by GamesRadar Two concealed handguns and two visible long guns, no more

What Rockstar has never published about him

There is no Rob Nelson biography on rockstargames.com or on the Newswire, checked September 10, 2026. No level 1 or level 2 source gives the year he joined the company. The dates and job titles that circulate, a 2003 hire at Rockstar Toronto, an art director credit on GTA V, come from fan wikis and X accounts, and are not published here.

Sources do not even agree on his remit: TroisCouleurs introduces him as head of development at Rockstar Games, Dazed and GamesRadar attach him to Rockstar North. How the job splits with Aaron Garbut is undocumented too, and nothing on the record says who signs off on what.

Asked on September 1, 2026, after those July sessions, what he is proudest of in GTA 6, Nelson pointed to how the systems interlock and the roleplaying room that opens up. He named no system in particular.
