GTA 6 is PS5 and Xbox only: no PS4, no Switch 2 version

With 76 days to go before November 19, 2026, Grand Theft Auto VI has two announced platforms, the PS5 and the Xbox Series X|S. There is no PS4 version, and Nintendo's Switch 2 is named on none of the game's pages.

GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and on those two machines only, at $79.99. Sony's own listing says the game 'will only be playable on PlayStation 5 consoles. It will not be available for PlayStation 4 consoles.' The Nintendo Switch 2, out since June 5, 2025, appears in no Rockstar document, and the studio has never explained the omission.

Grand Theft Auto VI ships on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and for those two machines only, at $79.99. Rockstar’s support page answers the platform question in a single line, “You can pre-order Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S”, and names nothing else. On its own listing, Sony is blunter: “Grand Theft Auto VI will only be playable on PlayStation 5 consoles. It will not be available for PlayStation 4 consoles.”

Rockstar’s product page shows two platform badges, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, under a “Plays Best On PlayStation 5” banner. The Take-Two pre-order release, put out on Business Wire on June 24, 2026, names no other console either. Sony prints its PS4 line twice, once on the product page and once on the pre-order support page published June 25, 2026.

The Nintendo Switch 2, by contrast, is nowhere. Neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has named it in a single document or product page tied to the game. The silence is not a matter of timing: the console launched on June 5, 2025 at a $449.99 list price, so a port would be feasible in principle. Rockstar has chosen not to mention it.

The hardware gap, in numbers

Power is the first reason. The PS5 was built to load and stream a whole city in real time, and neither the PS4 nor the Switch 2 can keep that pace.

Machine GPU Memory Storage
PlayStation 5 10.28 teraflops 16 GB GDDR6, 448 GB/s 825 GB SSD, 5.5 GB/s
PlayStation 4 1.84 teraflops 8 GB GDDR5 mechanical hard drive
Nintendo Switch 2 about 3.072 teraflops (docked) 9 GB usable, 102 GB/s 256 GB UFS

The PS5 GPU is roughly 5.6 times more powerful than the PS4’s, and its 5.5 GB/s SSD has no equivalent on the 2013 console’s spinning drive. The Switch 2 does better without closing the gap: Digital Foundry’s measurements, published on May 14, 2025, put its custom Nvidia chip at about a third of the PS5’s GPU, with 9 GB of memory available to games against 16 GB. Rockstar has never spelled out why the Switch 2 is left off. The silence is the fact; the hardware argument is an inference.

Rockstar serves the current console, then ports

The series history fills in the rest. Grand Theft Auto V shipped on September 17, 2013 for PS3 and Xbox 360, on November 18, 2014 for PS4 and Xbox One, on April 14, 2015 for PC, and on March 15, 2022 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Every step served the console generation then in place, never the one before it. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick put the logic plainly: “Rockstar always starts on console because I think with regard to a release like that you’re judged by serving the core. Like really serving the core consumer.”

Zelnick has also said the PC share of a Take-Two multiplatform title has grown from 1 to 2 percent twenty years ago to 40 to 50 percent today. That is why PC stays on the roadmap while the PS4 and Xbox One do not.

On Nintendo, there is no precedent to lean on. The last Grand Theft Auto to reach a Nintendo machine was Chinatown Wars, built for the Nintendo DS and released on March 17, 2009 in North America. No GTA has ever run on a Nintendo home console, from the Nintendo 64 to the Switch.

A Switch 2 port surfaces now and then among insider accounts: in June 2026, Nash Weedle floated a 2027 release, with no confirmation from Rockstar or Nintendo. Nothing backs it so far. The studio has said nothing about a cloud version for Switch either, the only technically credible route for a game this size on that hardware.
