GTA 6 saves: free Xbox cloud, 100GB PS5 cloud via PS Plus
The Microsoft Store page for GTA 6 lists Xbox cloud saves among its five capabilities, and Microsoft provides that service without a subscription. On PS5, the same job belongs to PlayStation Plus, at 100GB for $79.99 a year.

As of September 16, 2026, the Microsoft Store page for GTA 6 lists Xbox cloud saves among its five declared capabilities, and Microsoft states the service works without a subscription. On PlayStation 5, cloud saving runs through PlayStation Plus, which holds 100GB of PS5 saved data and costs $79.99 for twelve months. Moving from a PS5 to a PS5 Pro copies saved data over the network, per the guide Sony published on November 7, 2024.
The Microsoft Store listing for Grand Theft Auto VI declares five capabilities as of September 16, 2026, and cloud saving is one of them: “Xbox cloud saves” sits beside “Single player”, “Optimized for Xbox Series X|S”, “Xbox achievements” and “Xbox presence”. That line is the only official commitment made so far about saving the game, and it covers the Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series S alike.
Microsoft spells out what the capability covers in its cloud game saves FAQ. Uploads are automatic: “While you’re connected to the XBOX network, saved games are automatically stored in the cloud. If you use your XBOX profile to sign in to a different XBOX console, your saves are available from that console.” The same page sets the boundary for offline sessions: leave a game while disconnected and that save “won’t be uploaded to the cloud” until the console reaches the network again.
One line on that page separates the two platform holders. Asked “Do I need an XBOX subscription to use cloud storage?”, Microsoft answers “No”, and adds that the allowance tracks the library: “As your game library grows, so does your cloud storage”. Sony’s support page is equally blunt in the other direction: “Become a PlayStation Plus member to use cloud storage.”
What cloud saving costs on each machine
| Checked September 16, 2026 | Xbox Series X and S | PlayStation 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Access condition | no subscription | PlayStation Plus, all three tiers |
| Stated allowance | grows with your library | 100GB of PS5 saved data |
| Yearly price | $0 | $79.99, Essential tier |
| Upload | automatic while connected | automatic once enabled in Settings |
On PS5 the switch lives in Settings, Saved Data and Game/App Settings, then Saved Data (PS5), Sync Saved Data, Auto-Sync Saved Data. Sony also requires automatic updates to be on and the console to stay connected during rest mode. The copy then leaves when you close a game or send the console to sleep.
Moving consoles without losing the playthrough
The common case in November 2026 will be a jump from a PS5 to a PS5 Pro. Sony documented it on November 7, 2024, the day the machine launched: both consoles on the same network, the same account signed in on each, trophies synced, then Settings, System, System Software, Data Transfer. The move carries “your user information, games downloaded to your console’s hard drive or SSD, save data, and select console settings”. An M.2 SSD fitted in the old PS5 slots straight into the new one, which spares you re-downloading the game and the space it demands.
Two limits appear in plain text on PlayStation’s support page: one source console transfers to a single destination console, and “any game or saved data that’s already saved on your destination console doesn’t transfer”.
Players who skip PlayStation Plus still have the USB route, on a FAT32 or exFAT drive, via Settings, System, System Software, Back Up and Restore. It carries a cost: “When restoring data, your PS5 console will erase all data saved on your console”, and trophies sit outside the backup. Sony adds that restoring a PS5 turns off Console Sharing and Offline Play.
The one save transfer Rockstar has ever run
On March 4, 2022, eleven days before GTA V reached PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar Games opened a save deposit for Story Mode, under the Game tab of the Pause Menu and the Upload Save Game option. The announcement set two limits: “you can only store one game save per platform at a time and saves will remain available to download for 90 days”. One save per platform, ninety days on the shelf.
That deposit ran through the Rockstar Games Social Club, and the Microsoft Store listing for GTA VI keeps a similar door open: certain game features “may require internet connection, Rockstar Games account registration”. Rockstar Games has published nothing about GTA VI’s own save system with 64 days to go before November 19, 2026: not the number of slots, not whether a manual save exists, not how often the game autosaves. No bridge between a PS5 playthrough and an Xbox Series playthrough has been announced either.
