GTA 6: Rupert Humphries, Rockstar's story chief, in his own words
Rupert Humphries runs narrative at Rockstar and has shared writing credits on the series since GTA IV in 2008. Since August 26, 2026, he has been the one explaining GTA 6's story to the press, from Dazed to Game Informer.

Rupert Humphries is senior vice president of narrative at Rockstar, the studio behind GTA 6. Credited as a writer on GTA IV (2008), GTA V (2013) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) alongside Dan Houser, he told Dazed on August 26, 2026 that the game is 'a Bonnie and Clyde-type narrative,' and told Game Informer on September 29 that the story will not take players everywhere on the map.
Rupert Humphries is senior vice president of narrative at Rockstar, heading story work at the studio that releases Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar Games publishes no biography of him, and the year he joined the company has never been made public.
Writer on GTA IV, GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2
His name sits in the writing credits of three Rockstar games, each time next to Dan Houser, the company co-founder who led writing on the series.
| Game | Release | Credited writers | Script |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto IV | April 29, 2008 | Dan Houser, Rupert Humphries | about 1,000 pages |
| Grand Theft Auto V | September 17, 2013 | Dan Houser, Rupert Humphries, Michael Unsworth | not disclosed |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | October 26, 2018 | Dan Houser, Michael Unsworth, Rupert Humphries | about 2,000 pages for the main story |
Of the three writers credited on GTA V, Humphries is the one Rockstar puts forward for GTA 6. Dan Houser left Rockstar Games on March 11, 2020, and Michael Unsworth, vice president of writing, left in 2023 after sixteen years.
What he has said about GTA 6
Speaking to Dazed on August 26, 2026, the day before the Extended Look aired, Humphries called the game “a Bonnie and Clyde-type narrative.” A day later Rob Nelson walked TroisCouleurs through the process: the writers pick the characters who can carry players across the world, then Humphries “delivers a page and a half of the story.” The plot so far is laid out in our GTA 6 story guide.
Most of the cast, he told Dazed, comes out of fieldwork in Florida:
“We will meet with ex-criminals, law enforcement, club promoters, gun dealers and anyone notorious or influential who’ll take our calls. We hang out, get a feeling for the place, listen to the stories, cross-reference that with books and journalism, and try to get to the heart of which characters will bring the city we are creating to life.”
Music shaped the writing too. Humphries named Miami bass, Kodak Black and Sexyy Red, then the places the scene lives: house parties in Overtown, Booby Trap on the River, and South Beach venues “where bottles can cost thousands of dollars.” In his words, “We needed characters who could take us through those worlds.” The tracks heard in the video are listed in every song in the Extended Look.
In Game Informer’s issue, posted September 29, 2026, he set the limits of how much of the map the story covers: “We don’t have time to take you everywhere, but we want to be able to explore and get a feel for most of the places, cultures, and vibes.”
To LOVE magazine, in excerpts IGN ran on October 2, 2026, he defended the exaggeration: “If you are going to put all this effort into creating a version of today’s world, it has to be more over the top, more insane, more in your face. Otherwise, you could just go outside and live in the real world.” IGN adds that he frames Jason and Lucia’s American dream as a house and paying off their debts, not a fortune. The full interview runs in LOVE issue 27, out October 5, 2026.
