GTA 6 leaks 'heartbreaking,' Rockstar says as date holds

Rockstar Games acknowledged the leak of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay videos in a letter posted to its social channels on August 26, 2026, eight days after the first clips surfaced on August 18. The studio holds the November 19, 2026 release date, announces the Extended Look, its long gameplay presentation, for the following day, and signs off “Sincerely, Rockstar Games.”

The sentence every outlet ran with sits in the opening paragraph:

It would be an understatement to say that having videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team, and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time.

Two words in brackets carry everything the letter says about how finished the game is. Rockstar apologizes that things have taken as long as they have, “from getting the game finished (nearly there!) to sharing more details and official gameplay”. No percentage, no milestone, no interim date. The November 19, 2026 date is restated exactly as it stood.

Rockstar names nobody. It does not say how many videos leaked, which ones it considers genuine, or which build they came from, and it gives no account of how the files left the company. No figure is put on the damage, and nothing in the text describes a response of any kind, while clips kept appearing every day from August 18 to August 26, 2026, including a prologue sequence of more than four minutes that Kotaku covered on the day the apology went up.

The last paragraph is a request. Rockstar writes that it hopes “everyone will wait a bit longer to experience the game for themselves on November 19”, and tells the players who sent messages of support that “your words have meant more to this team than you can imagine”. The Extended Look landed the next afternoon, August 27, 2026 at 3 p.m. New York time on Netflix, before going up on Rockstar’s YouTube channel.

Fifteen days later, a different document spelled out what the letter left blank. In an opening note presented on September 10, 2026 to the Glasgow employment tribunal, reported by IGN and relayed by GameSpot, Rockstar writes that “guarding the secrets of the unique gameplay and design are akin to Apple protecting the iPhone or Coke protecting its formula”, and that the “standards and expectations regarding information security and privacy are exponentially beyond that of most employers”. The studio says it had to coat its office windows with privacy film after drones were flown up to photograph the inside of the building. Visitors cannot take pictures, external storage devices are barred from the offices, and remote work is restricted. Five investigators and one director watch for leaks full time.
