GTA 6 and Jason Schreier: every Bloomberg report, date by date
Jason Schreier has covered video games for Bloomberg News since April 2020. On GTA 6, his reporting has often landed before Rockstar's own announcements, and the record from 2022 to 2026 shows what was borne out.

Jason Schreier is the Bloomberg News reporter who has covered video games since April 2020, after nine years at Kotaku. On July 27, 2022, he reported a Latina lead and a fictional Miami, which Trailer 1 showed on December 4, 2023. On January 8, 2026, he said the game was still not content complete; Take-Two has kept the November 19, 2026 release date.
Jason Schreier is the Bloomberg News reporter who covers video games, and the journalist the rest of the press cites at every stage of Grand Theft Auto VI. He joined Bloomberg in April 2020 after nine years at Kotaku. The game launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
He has written three books on the industry, including “Blood, Sweat, and Pixels” in 2017 and “Play Nice,” about Blizzard, in 2024.
What he reported, and what Rockstar published next
| Date | What Schreier reported or said | What followed officially |
|---|---|---|
| July 27, 2022 | A Latina lead in a duo, a fictional Miami, at least two years of work left | December 4, 2023: Trailer 1, Lucia, Vice City, release “in 2025” |
| September 19, 2022 | The leaked videos are authentic | Same day: Rockstar acknowledges a network intrusion |
| November 8, 2023 | An announcement within days, a trailer in December | Same day: Sam Houser announces the trailer for early December |
| May 2, 2025 | A delay partly to spare staff “brutal crunch” | Same day: Rockstar sets May 26, 2026 |
| October 30, 2025 | 30 to 40 staff fired | November 6, 2025: Rockstar cites confidential information shared in public |
| January 8, 2026 | The game is “still not content complete” | February 3, 2026: Take-Two repeats November 19 |
| August 10, 2026 | Take-Two talks only about single player | September 17, 2026: Zelnick says “single player experience” |
The July 27, 2022 investigation drew on more than 20 interviews with current and former Rockstar staff. It said the lead would be a Latina woman, one half of a Bonnie and Clyde inspired pair, set in “a fictional version of Miami and its surrounding areas.” Trailer 1 introduced Lucia on December 4, 2023, 16 months later.
On September 18, 2022, as 90 development videos spread from GTAForums, he posted on Twitter that “based on the scale hard to imagine it’s not real.” His story the next day, co-written with Cecilia D’Anastasio, cited people familiar with development who said the footage was authentic. Rockstar acknowledged the hack on September 19.
On January 8, 2026, on Button Mash, he said: “This is a big and complicated game, and the last I heard, it was still not content complete.” Whether it would hit November was “really hard to say.” Take-Two repeated the date on February 3, 2026, and the November 19 date still holds.
Bylined stories and social posts
His bylined stories go through Bloomberg’s editors. His Bluesky posts, YouTube videos and podcast appearances are his alone, with no published document behind them: the “brutal crunch” line of May 2, 2025 came from Bluesky.
The August 10, 2026 claim came from a YouTube video, in which he said Take-Two would not discuss the future GTA Online for a long while, and that he did not expect microtransactions in story mode. On September 17, 2026, Strauss Zelnick told Take-Two shareholders: “We’re launching GTA 6 as a single player experience on two major platforms.” The full picture is in what we know about GTA Online.
His August 21, 2026 Bloomberg newsletter ran under the headline “Rockstar Rattled As ‘Grand Theft Auto VI’ Leaks Again.” Five days later, Rockstar called the leaks “heartbreaking for our team” and kept the November 19 release.
