GTA 6 Extended Look: Twitch went down, Netflix stayed up

Netflix carried all 26 minutes and 48 seconds of the Extended Look on August 27, 2026 without a lasting failure. Twitch, which Rockstar had cleared creators to stream from 3 p.m. ET, was reporting a major outage an hour later.

Twitch listed Web, Chat and Video as a Major Outage on its own status page at 4:09 p.m. ET on August 27, 2026, about an hour into the Extended Look, and Downdetector logged more than 17,000 reports that afternoon. Netflix, which carried all 26 minutes and 48 seconds, peaked at 3,129 reports, and that peak came at 2:49 p.m. ET, eleven minutes before the first frame.

Twitch listed Web, Chat and Video (Watching) as a “Major Outage” on its own status page at 4:09 p.m. ET on August 27, 2026, about an hour after “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look” began on Netflix. Downdetector logged more than 17,000 reports for Twitch that afternoon, Forbes reported. Netflix, the paid route that had taken three weeks of criticism since the announcement of August 6, peaked at 3,129 reports, and that peak came at 2:49 p.m. ET, eleven minutes before the first frame.

August 27, 2026 runs to the minute, in Eastern time.

Twitch Support posted two sentences on X while it was happening:

We are aware of issues impacting several areas of our site. Our teams are working to resolve these.

Nothing followed. No cause, no duration, no incident note. The platform had expected the crowd, if tech-insider.org has it right: a dedicated “GTA VI” category went up before the broadcast.

Rockstar had aimed that crowd at Twitch. On August 26 the studio told creators on X they were “free to livestream An Extended Look from 3 p.m. ET on August 27”, provided they did not restream the unedited video in full without context or commentary. Every one of those streams started on the same minute.

Which turns the complaint of the past three weeks upside down. Since the announcement of August 6, 2026, the argument against a six hour window on Netflix before YouTube was that Rockstar had put a trailer behind a paid subscription. The subscription service held. The free route, watching over a streamer’s shoulder, is the one that gave way.

What the audience numbers are worth

Sensor Tower, whose measurements GamesIndustry.biz published on August 28, 2026 from GamesBeat, puts US mobile viewership up 35 percent between the hour before the broadcast and the hour of the broadcast, mobile app usage up 50 percent against the average for that hour over the previous twelve Thursdays, and web traffic up 125 percent. These are estimates from an analytics firm, not figures from Netflix.

On the Twitch side, two values circulate, and they do not measure the same thing. Destructoid, picked up by ThePCEnthusiast, counted 881,000 combined viewers across the relevant streams less than ten minutes before the start. A peak of 1.8 million concurrent viewers during the broadcast is also going around, on the word of playtoearn.com alone: the first adds channels together before anything had aired, the second claims a simultaneous peak taken while the service was failing. Nobody has put a number on the audience that never got in at all.

Rockstar Games has published no audience figure of its own, for Netflix or for YouTube. In May 2025 Take-Two volunteered the 475 million views the second trailer drew in 24 hours.

A cleaner count exists for the reaction streams built around the reveal. Streams Charts tracked 9,038 streamers covering the presentation, for a combined peak of 3,970,738 viewers and 5,227,798 hours watched, Eurogamer reported on August 29, 2026. That peak beat Summer Game Fest 2026’s own high of 3.81 million. Twitch carried about 44 percent of those watched hours, ahead of YouTube at 34.8 percent and Kick at 20.2 percent. Spanish streamer Juan Alberto “IlloJuan” García drew 233,520 concurrent viewers, a new high for his own channel, ahead of Rubius at 191,056 and IShowSpeed at 177,887.

Cloudflare, which says it handles more than a fifth of global internet traffic, logged the same afternoon from the infrastructure side. Netflix’s worldwide traffic rose 16 percent during the broadcast, 45 percent in the UK. Twitch traffic rose 12 percent on average over the following three hours, peaking at 35 percent. YouTube traffic jumped 39 percent when the video went live there at 1 a.m. Rockstar’s own website saw the sharpest swing of all: up 172 percent worldwide, up 1,210 percent in the UK.

Eleven minutes, or the best part of an hour

Downdetector does not measure an outage. It counts user reports, which follows the size of the audience at a given minute as much as the severity of the fault. The 3,129 Netflix reports of 2:49 p.m. ET arrived before the broadcast, while a very large number of people were reloading a page that had nothing on it yet.

The length of the Twitch interruption is the loosest figure of the day. A StatusGator reading, quoted by tech-insider.org, puts service unavailability at roughly 11 minutes, while several newsrooms tracked complaints for close to an hour. Eurogamer, writing two days later, puts some viewers locked out of both Netflix and Twitch for 40 to 50 minutes. All three can be true at once: a service that answers again is not a service that works again for everyone reconnecting at the same moment. Twitch has added nothing to those two sentences of August 27.
