GTA 6 online mode: single-player launch, GTA Online still earns
Rockstar Games sells Grand Theft Auto VI as a single-player experience for November 19, 2026. Take-Two's filings list two GTA Online content updates in twelve months, and tribunal documents describe an online 32 player format.
: The Red Dead Online precedent, put at one month by two outlets and seven by two others, and the window Eurogamer and Polygon read into Dan Clancy's "next year".

Rockstar Games has announced no online mode for GTA 6. The June 24, 2026 pre-order release sells 'a single-player experience', and the US PlayStation Store page lists the game as 1 player, offline play enabled. Calling a game single-player is not saying it ships without an online mode, and Rockstar has never ruled one out for launch.
Rockstar Games has announced no online mode for Grand Theft Auto VI. The pre-order release of June 24, 2026 sells “a single-player experience set in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet”, the only description attached to a game priced at $79.99 for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The US PlayStation Store page lists it as “1 player”, with “Offline play enabled”.
Calling a game a single-player experience is not saying it ships without an online mode. Rockstar “has not confirmed outright that there won’t be an online mode at launch”, as GameSpot put it on August 27, 2026. No future multiplayer has been announced, under the label “GTA Online 2” or any other.
Two GTA Online updates in twelve months
Take-Two publishes no roadmap, but its quarterly results list what shipped, and the twelve months before August 2026 hold two content updates: “A Safehouse in the Hills” on December 10, 2025, then the “Kortz Center Heist Summer Update” on July 14, 2026. Both went out on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC, three platforms GTA 6 will not serve on November 19, 2026, since no PC version has been announced. GTA Online itself has sold as a standalone product on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S since 2022.
Recurrent consumer spending, the bucket holding GTA Online and its in-game purchases, came to 84 percent of Take-Two’s Net Bookings in the quarter reported on August 7, 2026, up from 73 percent in the November 6, 2025 release: the highest share the publisher has ever printed. The fiscal 2027 outlook of $8.0 to $8.2 billion still rests on a single Rockstar Games line, Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, 2026.

“Support” is the word nobody has defined
Strauss Zelnick, chief executive of Take-Two, said in early August 2026 that “we do expect to support Grand Theft Auto Online going forward”, quoted by Vice on August 8. Outlook Respawn added on August 11 that the update cadence should not change materially. At the shareholder meeting, Take-Two went one sentence further: “we will continue to support GTA Online after GTA 6 release and beyond”, as reported by IGN on September 17, 2026. Neither line says whether support means new content or servers left running, or for how long.
Asked by IGN in 2025, Zelnick pointed to NBA 2K Online, launched in China in 2012 and kept alive after NBA 2K Online 2 arrived in 2017: “We did not sunset Online 1. They both are still in the market.” He was speaking “theoretically only”.
Jason Schreier of Bloomberg said on August 10, 2026 that Take-Two and Rockstar “are not planning to talk anytime soon about what the new GTA Online will look like”. He gave no date and said nothing about a delay.
The only online project Rockstar documents in public runs on GTA V. Its Newswire announced nopixel V on September 1, 2026, the next version of the largest GTA V roleplay server, with “the official announcement of the nopixel V closed beta arriving on September 8 where invited players will access the experience through the Rockstar Games Launcher”. The post says nothing about GTA 6 multiplayer.
Where the 32-player figure came from
The number comes from documents filed with an employment tribunal in Scotland and reported by GamesRadar+ on January 14, 2026, in which an employee mentioned a test session involving 32 players. Rockstar’s own filing describes “an unannounced online service” and places the internal discussion on “the specific number of online players planned for this service, a material feature of this new title, which has not yet been revealed by Rockstar”.
Dexerto quoted a statement from the same proceedings on September 10, 2026, placing “an online 32 player format” among “the most closely guarded secrets of the company”. Rock Paper Shotgun printed the full wording the next day, from filings Rockstar Games and Take-Two emailed to the site: “an online 32 player format which was highly confidential at that time”. Jennifer Kolbe, Rockstar studio director, is quoted saying “To see team members sharing details regarding online player numbers for a confidential project, not yet in the public domain, was extraordinarily alarming”.
None of it says which game the format belongs to: 32-player sessions in GTA 6 fit the line as readily as a new GTA Online, Rock Paper Shotgun notes. Nor is 32 necessarily a step up. Rockstar still describes GTA Online as “a dynamic and ever-evolving online universe for up to 30 players”, and GamesRadar+ points out that sessions take two spectators on top, which makes 32 connections.

The Red Dead precedent, put at one month or at seven
GTA Online followed Grand Theft Auto V by fourteen days, on October 1, 2013, not “several weeks after” as some US outlets have written. The Red Dead Redemption 2 gap is the contested one: Eurogamer and Polygon both put Red Dead Online at “seven months after launch” on September 18, 2026, while USA Today For The Win and Outlook Respawn put it at roughly a month in August.
Twitch chief executive Dan Clancy puts the multiplayer in 2027 in an interview Bloomberg published on September 17, 2026, which frames the year as his own expectation rather than something Rockstar told him. Eurogamer reads it against the Red Dead precedent and gets a window running “as early as January, some two months after the big single-player release, or as far out as the end of 2027”. Polygon keeps the same January lower bound.
Rockstar has published no date, no player count per session and no business model. Nothing either on carrying over money and property earned since 2013, crossplay between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the end of support on PS4 and Xbox One, or updates for the rest of 2026.
