GTA 6 DLC: Rockstar's story expansions since GTA IV, dated

Rockstar Games released three single-player expansions between February 2009 and October 2010, for GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption. Since 2013, its post-launch content has gone through online modes, and Take-Two calls GTA 6 a single-player experience.

Rockstar Games has released three story expansions: The Lost and Damned on February 17, 2009 and The Ballad of Gay Tony on October 29, 2009 for GTA IV, then Undead Nightmare on October 26, 2010 for Red Dead Redemption. GTA 5 got none, which Rockstar blamed on resources in 2017. For GTA 6, due November 19, 2026, no additional content has been announced as of September 30, 2026; Bloomberg reported in July 2022 a plan to add missions and cities regularly.

Rockstar Games has released three single-player expansions in its modern era, all between February 2009 and October 2010: two for Grand Theft Auto IV, one for Red Dead Redemption. Since GTA 5 in 2013, post-launch content has gone through the online mode. As of September 30, 2026, seven weeks before Grand Theft Auto VI arrives on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has announced any additional content.

The timeline, game by game

Game Post-launch content Date Launch platforms
GTA IV The Lost and Damned February 17, 2009 Xbox 360
GTA IV The Ballad of Gay Tony October 29, 2009 Xbox 360
GTA IV Episodes from Liberty City, both bundled April 13, 2010 PS3 and Windows
Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare October 26, 2010 PS3 and Xbox 360
GTA 5 GTA Online October 1, 2013 PS3 and Xbox 360
Red Dead Redemption 2 Red Dead Online, in beta November 27, 2018 PS4 and Xbox One

GTA IV came out on April 29, 2008, so The Lost and Damned followed nine and a half months later, as an Xbox 360 exclusive. PS3 and PC players waited until April 13, 2010 to get both episodes together.

Undead Nightmare, made by Rockstar San Diego, also shipped as a standalone disc from late November 2010 that did not need the base game. That disc had sold two million copies by August 2011.

GTA 5: the expansion Rockstar never made

GTA Online launched on October 1, 2013, two weeks after GTA 5. Asked by Game Informer on October 23, 2017, Rockstar director of design Imran Sarwar said skipping a story expansion was “not really a conscious decision, it’s just what happened.”

He gave three reasons in the same answer:

“With GTA V, the single-player game was absolutely massive and very, very complete. It was three games in one. The next-gen versions took a year of everyone’s time to get right, then the online component had a lot of potential but to come close to realizing that potential, also sucked up a lot of resources. And then there are other games, in particular Red Dead Redemption II.”

Sarwar added: “We would love to do more single-player add-ons for games in the future.”

Red Dead Redemption 2 went the same way. Red Dead Online opened in beta on November 27, 2018, and on July 7, 2022 Rockstar ended its major updates, saying it was moving development resources to the next Grand Theft Auto, Kotaku reported.

What has been said about GTA 6

In July 2022, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported that Rockstar planned to “add new missions and cities on a regular basis” after launch, as picked up by VGC on July 27, 2022. Neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has put its own name to that plan since.

On September 17, 2026, at Take-Two’s shareholder meeting, Strauss Zelnick described the launch “as a single player experience on two major platforms,” with no recurrent consumer spending anticipated, according to Inven Global. That spending (virtual currency, add-on content, in-game purchases) made up 84% of Take-Two’s net bookings in the April to June 2026 quarter, and it is where GTA 5 still earns, through GTA Online.

The two activities reserved for the Ultimate Edition are not a future expansion: they ship with the game on November 19, 2026, and the full list is in the Ultimate Edition breakdown.
