GTA 6 Standard or Ultimate: what the extra $20 buys you

Grand Theft Auto VI ships in two editions: Standard at $79.99 and Ultimate at $99.99, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, from November 19, 2026. Rockstar’s $399.99 collector’s box, on pre-order since September 24, 2026, is sold without the game.

Rockstar’s support page sums up the Standard: “The Grand Theft Auto VI: Standard Edition includes the game.” It is the only edition sold at retail, in a box that holds no disc: “A disc will not be included in the box.” That $79.99 sits $10 above the $69.99 tier of the PS5 and Xbox Series generation, IGN reported on June 24, 2026, and Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick defended it on August 7, 2026: “The real cost of a AAA video game is a whole lot lower today than it was 20 years ago. Pricing has not kept pace with inflation.”

The 16 items inside the Ultimate Edition Upgrade

Ultimate is the game plus a module, the Ultimate Edition Upgrade, whose contents Rockstar publishes. Sixteen entries, none of them handed over on launch night: they are “threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia’s story, with new items uncovered behind each chapter”.

The last two of the sixteen are things to play. The other fourteen are vehicles, weapons, clothes or shopfronts, including five locations shut to Standard owners. No digital soundtrack appears on Rockstar’s list, contrary to what several sites have written, and no early access either: Ultimate buyers play on November 19, 2026, like everyone else.

The Vintage Vice City Pack breaks no tie: its ’55 Vapid Stanier and Shore Court garage come with every pre-order placed before November 20, 2026, on both editions, retail code included.

Upgrading later costs the same $99.99, on Xbox

Rockstar support lets Standard owners, box buyers included, buy the upgrade once their code is redeemed. The Microsoft Store listed it at $20.00 from September 20 to October 14, 2026: $79.99 plus $20.00 matches the Ultimate to the cent.

Sony’s US page for the upgrade still read “Not available for purchase” on October 12, 2026, with a November 19 release date.

On the consoles’ own stores, read from September 22 to October 2, 2026, Microsoft’s upgrade covers each gap to the cent. Sony showed the same prices, upgrade “Unavailable”, except in Mexico, where Microsoft’s figures are Sony’s MXN 1,292.24 and 1,619.83 plus 16 percent.

Only the Standard can be discounted by a retailer, since Ultimate is stocked nowhere: “A physical version of the Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition is not available.” Amazon.com’s help page, read October 2, 2026, bills a boxed pre-order at “the lowest price offered by Amazon.com between the time you placed your order and the end of the day of the release date”, on listings marked Pre-order Price Guarantee. So which one

Sensor Tower estimated on August 13, 2026 that 89 percent of 4.3 million pre-orders were for the Ultimate. Karl Kontus, of Sensor Tower, puts a premium edition’s usual share at 10 to 20 percent: “I have never seen a 90% premium share before.” Take-Two gives no figure. Zelnick told CNBC on August 10 that pre-orders were “skewing more to the premium edition,” adding: “That might be a reflection of the fact that the most avid consumers are the ones who are pre-ordering.”

The $20 pays off for players who will run the PTT Youngin$ raid and the Classic Car Collection and use the five extra shops. Everyone else can start on the Standard and, on Xbox, upgrade later for the same total. A retail box gives up resale, since a redeemed code is tied to the account (no trade-in).
