GTA 6 pre-orders: where to buy and when you're charged

GTA 6 has been on pre-order since June 25, 2026 at $79.99, across Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, Target, GameStop and the three official stores. None of them undercuts the others, so the choice comes down to when the money leaves and when the code arrives.

Grand Theft Auto VI has been on pre-order since June 25, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, at $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition, and the American retailers have all settled on the same figure. Robert Anderson counted five of them at $79.99 for IGN on June 25, 2026: Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, Target and GameStop. The PlayStation Store, the Microsoft Store and Rockstar’s own store ask exactly that too. Europe is where the price broke: in France the box has sold at 60 euros since opening night, and Numerama found it still there on August 28, 2026, two months later.

Take-Two named four sales channels in its June 24, 2026 announcement, and only four: “Grand Theft Auto VI will be available at the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Rockstar Games Store, and global retailers and storefronts.” With the price flat across all of them, two things are left to separate one from another. The day the card is charged, and the day the code lands. Neither is printed next to the price.

The table below fills that gap. “Not disclosed” means no source consulted as of August 28, 2026 documents the practice, and the retailer’s own terms govern.

Where Standard Edition When the money leaves When the code lands
PlayStation Store $79.99 At checkout Preload from November 12
Microsoft Store $79.99 Wallet balance at once, card around November 9 Preload from November 12
Rockstar Store $79.99 Not disclosed Ships from November 12
Amazon $79.99 Not disclosed Delivery quoted for November 12
Walmart $79.99 Not disclosed Delivery quoted for November 12
Best Buy $79.99 Not disclosed Delivery quoted for November 12
Target $79.99 Not disclosed Not disclosed
GameStop $79.99 Not disclosed Ships November 19, two to three business days

PlayStation takes the money at checkout: its French listing states in capitals that a pre-order requires immediate payment, and the cancellation policy is written throughout for a pre-order already paid for. Microsoft splits the two cases. A Microsoft wallet balance goes straight away, while a card payment is taken roughly ten days before release, which puts it around November 9, 2026 for a November 19 game. Adam Langumier laid out that calendar for Numerama on June 19, 2026, quoting Xbox support. Seventy-six days sit between a pre-order placed on August 28 and the preload of November 12. On PlayStation the money is out of the account for all seventy-six.

A GameStop box arrives a week too late to preload

Tabitha Baker checked the delivery promises for GamesRadar on June 29, 2026 and found them split: Walmart, Best Buy and Amazon quote November 12, while GameStop holds to November 19, shipping in two to three business days for arrival on release day or shortly after. That gap is the whole point of the November 12 date. Take-Two set it so the code could feed the preload seven days ahead of launch, and Rockstar opens preloading at midnight local time on the same day. Order from GameStop and the code shows up once the servers are already live. How the preload works, and what it does to a refund, is covered in our November 12 preload guide.

The bonus is identical everywhere, and that is official

Any pre-order or purchase made before November 20, 2026 grants the Vintage Vice City Pack, whatever the edition and whatever the store, per Take-Two’s June 24, 2026 announcement. Rockstar’s support page lists what is in it: a 1955 Vapid Stanier with its garage, outfits and hairstyles, and an exclusive weapon finish.

Brad Bourque compared the listings for The Verge on July 5, 2026 and reached the plainest possible verdict.

There aren’t store-exclusive preorder bonuses, so you can buy from wherever you prefer without missing out on trinkets.

So a retailer cannot buy loyalty with content. It can only move the price, which none of the American chains has done, or move the delivery date, which GameStop has.

No shop can sell you the Ultimate Edition

Rockstar’s support page closes that door in one line: “A physical version of the Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition is not available.” The Independent found the same split in the United Kingdom on June 26, 2026, where the Standard Edition sits at Argos, Amazon, Very, GAME, EE, Studio, The Game Collection and ShopTo, while the Ultimate Edition lives only on the PlayStation Store and the Xbox Store. British prices run £69.99 and £89.99 on the Xbox UK store, with the upgrade at £20.00, against $20.00 in the United States.

Starting from a box and buying the upgrade later lands on the same total, so the route buys time rather than money, and our Standard against Ultimate comparison goes through the extra content item by item. What does not exist at all: a collector’s edition, a disc, a console bundle, a PC version, an early access window. MediaMarkt answered the question in its own product listing on June 26, 2026, quoted by eTeknix: “Rockstar Games has not announced any collector’s edition of GTA 6 to date.” Nothing has contradicted that answer since.

Where you buy decides where a PS5 code works

Rockstar published its region list in late July 2026, after weeks of contradictory retailer listings, as Sherif Saed reported for Eurogamer on July 27. North America is one zone covering the United States and Canada, so a code bought in Toronto redeems on an American account. The United Kingdom is a zone of its own, and a £69.99 box brought home from London will not redeem on a US account. Walmart and Target both spell out the restriction on their listings. Xbox is exempt: “Xbox: Codes purchased are not region-locked.” Rockstar adds one recommendation for everyone else, “It is recommended that you buy and play from a retailer that is in the country of your platform account to avoid potential activation problems.” What the box gives and takes away is set out in our download code guide.

Buying direct is an option outside the United States. The Rockstar Store ships to 31 countries, with an estimated shipping date of November 12, 2026, and duties or local taxes may be added on any delivery outside the United States and the United Kingdom.

Stock runs out on key quotas, not on discs

The June 25 opening was staggered. Rory Mellon tracked it for Tom’s Guide: Amazon first, then Target, then Walmart, then Best Buy, with GameStop taking pre-orders more than two hours after launch. Amazon was out of stock on the PS5 box in the United States on day one. Nothing physical explains that, since the box holds a code and there is no disc to press. Guillaume Henri put it down to publisher key allocation and logistics for Les Numeriques on June 27, 2026, and the same pattern repeated in Europe, where Amazon and Cdiscount pulled listings within 48 hours of opening and Amazon was back at 60 euros on July 1.

A pre-order placed today is not final. Sony’s cancellation policy is explicit: “Paid for your pre-order more than 14 days before the main product release date you may cancel a pre-order at any time before the release date and receive a refund.” The condition sits in the following sentences: the main download must not have started. Preloading counts, and an automatic download can start it without the buyer pressing anything, which is why the real deadline is November 12 and not November 19. Our cancellation guide walks through the console settings that protect that right.
