GTA 6 map size: where the 3x Red Dead 2 claim came from
Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, gave the number to a YouTuber in July 2026, and Kotaku published it on August 27. Rockstar has published no map of Leonida and no measurement, and the two games used as yardsticks cover the same ground.
GTA6 LIFE

The line reprinted everywhere since August 27, 2026, that the GTA 6 map is three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s, is not a measurement. It is a sentence Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, said out loud to the YouTuber TGG during one of the hands-off preview sessions held in Edinburgh in July 2026. Kotaku published it the day the embargo lifted. Rockstar Games has put nothing of the kind on its Newswire or on the Grand Theft Auto VI product page.
Here is what Nelson said, in full:
The map is twice the size of GTA 5’s map, three times the size of Red Dead 2’s map. Vice City itself is twice the size of Los Santos. And Vice City and its surrounding suburbs is 11 times bigger than Los Santos and its surroundings, which is, like, nuts, dude.
That closing clause sets the register. It is a conversation, not a spec sheet. Publicly the studio goes no further than “very big” and has never given a surface area, in square kilometers or in anything else. Its only geographic publication remains the Only in Leonida page of May 6, 2025, with six named destinations and 70 screenshots in 4K. No map was part of it.

Twice GTA 5 and three times Red Dead 2, from two maps of the same size
The arithmetic breaks in one line. Community measurements relayed by Newsweek put the GTA 5 map at 75.84 square kilometers, 48.15 of land and 27.69 of water, and the Red Dead Redemption 2 map at roughly 75. Two areas within a rounding error of each other. A single world cannot be twice one of them and three times the other.
| What Rob Nelson says | Ratio given | What exists as a measurement |
|---|---|---|
| Leonida against the GTA 5 map | 2x | 75.84 km2 for GTA 5, measured by players, never published by Rockstar |
| Leonida against the Red Dead 2 map | 3x | roughly 75 km2 for Red Dead 2, same origin |
| Vice City against Los Santos | 2x | no published measurement |
| Vice City and its suburbs against Los Santos and its surroundings | 11x | no published measurement |
Three readings hold up, and none of them is verified. The first: Nelson is not comparing the same thing from one clause to the next, total surface on one side, playable ground on the other. Water accounts for 27.69 of the 75.84 square kilometers of GTA 5, more than a third of the total, and taking it out moves every ratio. The second: the player measurements are wrong, which is perfectly possible, since nobody has audited them and Rockstar has never published its own. The third: the sentence is an oral approximation, said in a room, with no spreadsheet on the table.

The word that slipped
Vice ran the headline “GTA 6 Map Size Leaks Confirmed by Rockstar in New Previews” on August 28, 2026, and wrote that the studio had apparently validated the scale of the material that circulated without permission on August 18. Rockstar has never commented on that material, neither to back it nor to deny it. A developer handing out ratios in a preview room is not a studio authenticating a document.
The attribution is not settled either. Kotaku and TechSpot both tie the size ratios to the exchange with TGG, and keep the New York Times for a separate Nelson statement, the one about an 80-hour playthrough. Other outlets, among them the French site Gameblog, credit the ratios straight to the New York Times interview. Both versions cannot be right at once, and picking one decides what goes on the source line.
Rockstar still has not published a map. Not on May 6, 2025 with the second trailer, and not on August 27, 2026 with the 26 minutes and 48 seconds of the Extended Look, which runs from the Leonida Keys to Port Gellhorn and from Ambrosia to Mount Kalaga without ever putting an overview on screen. The nearest thing anyone has seen is the pause menu the press described in Edinburgh, satellite-style imagery in place of the street plan of GTA 5, and far more detailed. It carries no scale either.
