GTA 6 lifted UK PS5 and Xbox sales, Nielsen IQ says

Console sales moved in the UK during the week of the Extended Look. Nielsen IQ measured PS5 up 33% and Xbox Series X|S up 34%, one point apart, in a market where the two rarely track each other.

Nielsen IQ, reported by The Game Business and picked up by RockstarINTEL on September 3, 2026, measured UK PS5 sales up 33% and Xbox Series X|S sales up 34% in the week of the August 27, 2026 Extended Look. No unit volumes were published, and Newzoo's Ronan Patrick says the console growth pulled by GTA 6 may fall short of expectations.

PlayStation 5 sales in the UK rose 33% in the week Rockstar Games released the Grand Theft Auto VI Extended Look on August 27, 2026, and Xbox Series X|S sales rose 34%. Both figures come from Nielsen IQ, reported by The Game Business and picked up on September 3, 2026 by RockstarINTEL. Neither number is attached to a unit volume.

What is new here is how close the two platforms are. Estimates published since the reveal have put PlayStation well ahead: Sensor Tower measured a 606% rise on the PlayStation side and 127% on the Xbox side for August 27, 2026 against the previous day. In the UK weekly reading, the gap is one point.

The two sets of figures do not cover the same thing, and neither firm has published the scope behind its number. Nielsen IQ looks at a full week of console sales in one country. Sensor Tower compares a single day to the day before it, from a proprietary panel, and reports growth rates rather than units sold.

Newzoo walks back part of its own forecast

In the same report, Newzoo’s Ronan Patrick told The Game Business that the console sales growth pulled by the game “may not be as significant as hoped”. The firm said something else a week earlier: on August 27, 2026, its market intelligence director Emmanuel Rosier told GamesIndustry.biz that without GTA 6 the global console market would shrink in 2026. The two statements measure different lines, one market revenue and the other hardware units.

Buyer split is the other thing these readings leave open. Sensor Tower estimated 4.6 million pre-orders as of August 28, 2026, with 77% of them on PS5. Hardware moving at parity in the UK and pre-orders concentrated on one machine describe two different markets, and the choice between the two boxes is still live for the 77 days left before November 19, 2026.

Neither Sony nor Microsoft has published a hardware sales figure for that week. The commercial effect of the 26 minutes and 48 seconds of the Extended Look is, for now, counted by private research firms and by nobody else.
