GTA 6's 600,000 animations, and the 11x Rockstar never said
Rockstar Games gave The New York Times three animation totals for Grand Theft Auto VI on August 27, 2026. The eleven-times comparison with GTA V that followed a day later came from the press, not from the studio.

Rockstar Games gave The New York Times three numbers on August 27, 2026: more than 600,000 animations in Grand Theft Auto VI, around 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2, and around 55,000 in GTA V. The studio also said it built a team working on nothing but non-player characters and how believable they are.
What it did not give is a ratio. The write-ups that followed on August 28, ComicBook among them, landed on “eleven times more animations than GTA V”. Divide and the answer is 10.9. The gap is small and the point survives it, but the multiple came from a newsroom calculator, not from Rockstar, which published three totals and stopped there.
| Game | Animations given by Rockstar | Multiple those numbers carry |
|---|---|---|
| GTA 6 (November 19, 2026) | more than 600,000 | |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 (October 26, 2018) | around 300,000 | 2 times fewer |
| GTA V (September 17, 2013) | around 55,000 | 10.9 times fewer |
“More than 600,000” is a floor, not a count. No exact figure has been published, Rockstar has not said what it counts as a single animation, and nothing indicates how the total divides between street NPCs and the two playable leads.

Aaron Garbut, co-head of Rockstar North, told the Times what the volume is supposed to buy: “We art-directed each individual one of them.” What Rockstar described to Dazed on August 26, 2026 points the same way: NPC ages, builds, body modifications and clothing vary far more widely than in earlier games.
The ambition goes back to Red Dead Redemption 2. “Once we managed to accomplish that level of interactive fidelity in a more sparsely populated version of America 100 years ago,” Rob Nelson told the paper, “we were already imagining what it would be like if we could do that at the scale and density of a modern environment.” He gave IGN the price of it the same day: “The density of GTA 6 has been an exciting challenge, but that’s also part of the reason why our team has doubled in size.”
A second team, based in Los Angeles, works on NPC dialogue alone, according to ComicBook’s roundup of the invited press previews on August 28, 2026. No volume is attached to that work. No count of recorded lines has been published either.
The behavior all of it feeds is the part visible in the Extended Look. Rob Nelson, quoted by Insider Gaming on August 27, 2026, sets these NPCs against earlier GTA crowds: they no longer run on sight, and they can hold their ground and answer back. Rockstar’s own example is plainer. Walk down the street with a rifle out, Rockstar told Dazed, and the city reacts, though without an NPC witness, an alarm or a camera no crime registers on the six-star wanted system at all.
