GTA 6 roleplay: 'you can forget it's a game', says Rob Nelson
Asked what he is proudest of in GTA 6, Rob Nelson named neither a place nor a mechanic. Rockstar North's head of development pointed instead at the way the systems interlock, and at the roleplay room that opens.
GTA6 LIFE
Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, told YouTuber TGG that GTA 6 runs on 'a lot of very complicated systems working in an interconnected way', to the point that 'you can forget it's a game'. TGG transcribed the answer on X on September 1, 2026, and GamesRadar reported it the same day. Nelson named none of those systems.

Rob Nelson says GTA 6 runs on “a lot of very complicated systems working in an interconnected way”, far enough that a player can “forget it’s a game”. Rockstar North’s head of development and co-studio head was answering YouTuber TGG, shown the game at the Edinburgh studio in July 2026, who had asked what he was proudest of and what nobody would notice on day one. TGG transcribed the answer on X on September 1, 2026, and GamesRadar picked it up the same day.
The way the whole thing works together, we’ve got a lot of very complicated systems working in an interconnected way. You can forget it’s a game that has been designed to try and work this way. I think it allows you to sort of roleplay as heavily or as lightly as you want to.
Rob Nelson turns from there to violence, and to what it costs the player who picks it.
You can still cause as much carnage as you can imagine. How does that make you feel if it has an impact on certain things? Do you still want to do it? Do you want to do it more? Do you want to do it less? Do you care at all? It’s up to you and what matters to you.
What the impact lands on, Nelson does not say. The only documented mechanism that tracks how a player behaves over time is the criminal profile, which he described to IGN on August 27, 2026 as the successor to the Honor system of Red Dead Redemption 2, minus any clear good and evil axis. The roleplay half is measured by the things there are to do outside missions: GTA BOOM counted twenty categories of them in the Extended Look of August 27, 2026.
Not one system is named in the answer. Rockstar detailed several of them in the interviews of August 27, 2026.
| System | What was said about it | Source, date |
|---|---|---|
| Criminal profile | tracks player behaviour over time, with no good and evil axis | Rob Nelson to IGN, August 27, 2026 |
| Wanted system | a star needs a witness, an alarm or a camera | Rob Nelson to IGN, August 27, 2026 |
| Jason and Lucia’s relationship | rises with time spent together, stays separate from the criminal profile | Rob Nelson to IGN, August 27, 2026 |
| The characters’ bodies | change with food, exercise and sleep | Rockstar to Dazed, August 26, 2026 |
TGG also says the developers “didn’t make any comment” on the online mode. Rockstar has announced no multiplayer for GTA 6, and the future lineup table Take-Two published on August 7, 2026 carries a single Rockstar Games line: Grand Theft Auto VI, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, November 19, 2026.
