GTA 6 difficulty: Rockstar has announced no setting
Rockstar Games has published no difficulty mode, no options menu and no control scheme for GTA 6. Its own support pages show where the studio has been filing player assistance since GTA 5.

As of September 14, 2026, no difficulty setting has been announced for GTA 6, and the word difficulty does not appear once on the official product page. Rockstar Games files that dial elsewhere: Aim Settings in GTA 5 and GTA Online, and the Accessibility tab where Red Dead Redemption 2 keeps Tap Assist with its five values. In GTA 6, the pushback comes from the Wanted system, your clothes and your car.
Rockstar Games has announced no difficulty setting for Grand Theft Auto VI. Checked on September 14, 2026: the word “difficulty” appears not once on the official product page, and neither does “aim assist” or “targeting”. No options menu, no control scheme and no accessibility list has been published either.
The studio’s own support pages say where that dial has lived since GTA 5. The page updated on April 20, 2024 walks through the Settings tab of the pause menu and lists what sits in it: “a host of setting options like controls, audio, camera, and display.” Four entries, difficulty not among them. What does the job instead is called Aim Settings, which the page updated on March 8, 2024 treats as a preference carried over from Story Mode when you go online.
Red Dead Redemption 2 files its assistance in the same drawer. The page updated on May 19, 2023 asks the question on the player’s behalf: “there are certain action sequences that require me to tap a button repeatedly very quickly, which I find difficult.” The answer is an option called Tap Assist, under Settings, then Controls, then Accessibility, with five values: Off, 2x, 3x, 4x or Hold.
What pushes back in GTA 6
Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, gave IGN the entry condition of the Wanted system on August 27, 2026: “The Wanted system in GTA 6 requires that someone witness the crime, or an alarm needs to be set off for it to be reported to the law.” One star, he adds in the same answer, “is not going to be too difficult to get away from.”

After that it comes down to what the police wrote down. ComicBook reported on August 28, 2026 that shaking a pursuit depends on the clothes you wear, the car you drive, and whether you are alone or riding as a pair. IGN noted the same day that a mask pulled off after the job stops any description from reaching the officers, and that a fresh haircut is not enough on its own: it takes a full change of outfit. Police cars no longer sit on the minimap during a search either, Push Square reports, replaced by a circle marking the area being combed.
Car theft is gated by story progress. “You start off the game and there are certain parked cars that are not accessible to you until you get a bit further along with the story and you acquire certain tools to get into them,” Rob Nelson told IGN, “but you can always carjack any driver you see.” The tiers are laid out in stealing a locked car.
On the shooting side, auto-aim gives way to manual aiming with an assist, and the slow-motion mode called Focus paints non-lethal zones yellow, knees, elbows and hands, according to the GamesRadar+ guide updated on August 28, 2026. None of those descriptions is attributed to Rockstar Games: they are readings of the Extended Look. How gunfights work and how the police system works each have their own page.
One limit applies to all of it: no journalist has held the controller. The August 27, 2026 write-ups come from demos played to the room by Rockstar North, and IGN headlined its own on 69 details “we saw at Rockstar HQ”, seen, not played. The game also runs at 30 frames per second at launch, with no performance mode announced.
The options menu becomes readable on November 19, 2026, with the game. This page will log what is in it, setting by setting.
