GTA 6 weapon limit: two long guns, two concealed handguns

The carry limit for GTA 6 had been repeated since June with no Rockstar source behind it. Rob Nelson has now spelled it out, and Vice City reacts to how you hold what you carry.

Jason and Lucia can carry two concealed handguns and two long guns at once in GTA 6, according to Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, quoted by GamesRadar+ on September 6, 2026. Only one long gun sits on the back, the second stays in the off hand, and pedestrians move away once it is held. Rockstar Games has published no weapon list.

Jason and Lucia will carry two concealed handguns and two long guns at most in Grand Theft Auto VI, and only one of those long guns can go on the back. Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, laid out the rules for creator TGG in a video about movement and combat. GamesRadar+ published the quotes on September 6, 2026.

“You can always have two concealed handguns on you whenever you want. You can carry two long guns and they will be visible on your back and in your hand. You can’t put both on your back. One goes in your off hand [and] one on your back if you want to carry two. People will react to you if you are rolling around like that.”

What draws a reaction is how the gun is carried, not the fact of being armed. “NPCs are more nuanced than before, so if you just have a long gun on your back, you should be fine. If you’ve got one in your hand, people don’t like it and they react and start moving away from you,” Nelson adds. Rockstar Games had set out the principle to Dazed on August 26, 2026: “Walk down the street with a rifle, and the city will have something to say about it.”

The police run on their own scale. “If cops see you they will give you a warning. If you hold a long arm in both hands as though you are ready to fire it, things begin to escalate,” Nelson says in the same interview, reported by IGN on September 7, 2026. He sums it up: “The more guns you carry and the way you carry them matters.”

Asked why the change was made, Nelson points straight at the last game. “In GTA 5, you can pull out a shotgun from nowhere in front of people and they don’t react. That doesn’t work here,” he says, after explaining that the 2013 approach no longer holds “at this resolution with the behavioural sophistication we need from our population now.”

The two numbers had been circulating since June with no source

They come from a Dexerto piece published on June 25, 2026, the day after pre-orders opened, which noted that one Ultimate Edition bonus included a garage with a “weapons locker”. Dexerto’s verb was “suggests”, and in that same article the two numbers described Red Dead Redemption 2, where Arthur Morgan left the rest of his arsenal on his horse. Nelson is the first Rockstar North voice to attach them to GTA 6.

What the interview leaves out is where the rest of the arsenal goes. No slot count is given for the vehicle trunk, which IGN reported on August 27, 2026 holds weapons and a change of clothes, useful for shaking off the police as well as for a fight. Rockstar Games has published no weapon list and no total, and the only three models it has named come from the editions page. The one look anybody has had at the system is the 26 minutes of the Extended Look from August 27, 2026.
