GTA 6 gunplay: manual aim, Focus mode and firing to miss

GTA 6 replaces auto-aim with manual aiming backed by an assist. Rob Nelson also describes a new mechanic for the series: firing deliberately wide, so a shootout can end without a body.

GTA 6 drops auto-aim for manual aiming with an assist, adds dynamic cover and lets Jason and Lucia pick weapons off the ground, according to the previews published on August 27, 2026 by press invited to Rockstar North. A slow-motion mode called Focus paints lethal zones red and non-lethal ones yellow. Rob Nelson also describes suppressive fire that misses on purpose. Rockstar Games has published no weapon list.

Auto-aim is gone from Grand Theft Auto VI. Jason and Lucia aim by hand with an assist, and Push Square described a modern third-person shooter with dynamic cover on August 27, 2026, the day the embargo lifted on the previews written at Rockstar North in July 2026.

The slow-motion mode has a name, Focus, and a meter. allthings.how tied it on August 28, 2026 to a purple bar on screen, and Engadget wrote that Jason triggers it in the Extended Look, which drops red and yellow marks onto his target. GamesRadar+, whose weapons guide was updated on August 28, 2026, spelled out the colour code: yellow for non-lethal zones, knees, elbows and hands, red for the torso and head. The two protagonists do not get the same version of it.

Two mechanics are circulating under the name suppressive fire

Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, told Famitsu that players can angle their shots to miss on purpose, firing beside a police officer to startle him and buy the seconds needed to leave. Kotaku, which translated the interview on August 28, 2026, calls it a first for the series. The example Rob Nelson points to is in the Extended Look: Jason shoots out the tyres of a police car and causes the crash without killing the officers inside. Polygon described the same thing on August 31, 2026, without attaching it to any Rockstar statement.

The round-up GamingBible published on September 8, 2026 defines it differently: one character laying down covering fire while the other moves to a new position. No Rockstar statement describes that, and no Extended Look preview does either. One of the two definitions comes from the studio, and it is the one about missing on purpose.

Shooting to stop rather than to kill

A shot to the arm or the leg takes an opponent out of the fight, and a well-placed one knocks the weapon out of his hands, IGN wrote on August 27, 2026 in its list of 69 details. GamesRadar+ infers that the Moreland 850 shotgun, which Jason picks up off a body during the safehouse assault, allows non-lethal takedowns, while saying plainly that the point is not established.

Drawing a weapon in public is no longer free. Rockstar Games put it this way to Dazed on August 26, 2026:

“Walk down the street with a rifle, and the city will have something to say about it.”

Conversation options with a passer-by only open with the weapon holstered, IGN notes. The carrying rules have since been detailed: two long guns visible at most, only one of them on the back.

What a firefight leaves on the ground

The car boot doubles as a wardrobe and an armoury, holding spare clothes and guns, which makes it the resupply point of any getaway, according to IGN. Weapon pickups and the weapon wheel both appear in the Extended Look of August 27, 2026. Engadget caught an animation detail in the same video: Lucia reloads a pump-action shotgun one-handed, throwing it up and catching it.

No weapon list, and nobody held a controller

Rockstar Games has published no weapon catalogue and no total, and the only three models named officially come from the editions page. Nothing has been said either about what suppressive fire does to the criminal profile, the behaviour tracker that runs alongside the wanted level: not whether it moves, not by how much. Checked again on September 8, 2026.

No journalist has held a controller. The July 2026 demo was played in front of the room, under embargo until August 27, 2026. What is described here is a system that was shown, not a difficulty anyone has measured.
