GTA 6 code in a box: $79.99, no disc, no resale, no trade-in

The Grand Theft Auto VI box sold at Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, Target and GameStop costs $79.99 and contains a download code instead of a disc, which ties the copy to the first account that redeems it: no lending, no resale, no trade-in. That is the same $79.99 the PlayStation Store and the Microsoft Store charge for the digital Standard Edition.

Rockstar states it on its own store page:

Physical versions will only contain a download code inside the box to support pre-load on November 12. A disc will not be included in the box.

Take-Two used the same wording on June 24, 2026: boxes ship from November 12, 2026, seven days before release, so the code can be used for the preload. IGN counted five US retailers listing the box at $79.99 on June 25, 2026, and Target still showed that price on September 20, 2026, with “Delivers 11/12/26” on the page.

No disc has been announced to make up for it. The Hollywood Reporter reported on June 25, 2026, citing a source familiar with the plans, that “At this point in time, there are no plans for Grand Theft Auto VI discs to be printed, not at launch, and not months after.” Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick did not close the door when IGN asked him on August 7, 2026: “I wouldn’t rule out anything at this stage of the game.” As of August 28, 2026, nothing has been announced either way.

The PS5 code only works where you bought it

Rockstar published its region list in late July 2026, after a month of contradictory retailer listings, as Sherif Saed reported for Eurogamer on July 27, 2026. North America is a single zone, Canada and the United States together.

Rockstar’s support page adds a plain instruction: “It is recommended that you buy and play from a retailer that is in the country of your platform account to avoid potential activation problems.” The Xbox line on the same page is shorter: “Codes purchased are not region-locked.”

So a £69.99 box brought back from the UK will not redeem on a US PlayStation account, and a $79.99 US box will not redeem on a British one. A Canadian box does work on a US account, same zone.

What the box does still get you

The Vintage Vice City Pack comes with every pre-order and every purchase made before November 20, 2026, whatever the edition or the store, per Take-Two on June 24, 2026, and the boxed code grants the game and the pack alike.

The pack holds a ’55 Vapid Stanier with its garage, outfits, hairstyles and an exclusive weapon finish. No retailer has an exclusive bonus, as Brad Bourque wrote for The Verge on July 5, 2026. The free month of GTA+ stays with the download: Take-Two’s June 24, 2026 release offers it “for digital pre-orders”, and Rockstar Support’s list of physical pre-order bonuses leaves it out. The box gives up a month the Rockstar Store bills at $7.99.

The Ultimate Edition has no box at all. Rockstar’s support page: “A physical version of the Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition is not available, but physical Standard Edition owners can purchase the Ultimate Edition Upgrade from the PlayStation or Microsoft stores after their Standard Edition code has been used.” That upgrade sells for $20.00 on the US Microsoft Store: $79.99 plus $20.00 comes to $99.99, the exact price of the Ultimate Edition bought outright. The UK lines up the same way, £69.99 plus £20.00 against £89.99. Starting from a box buys a delay, not a discount.

The box arrives on November 12, 2026 so its code can feed the preload, and the game stays locked until November 19. Walmart, Best Buy and Amazon quote November 12; GameStop holds to November 19, per Tabitha Baker for GamesRadar on June 29, 2026, so a GameStop box misses the preload window by a week.
