GTA 6 Florida Man moments: the trailer 1 scenes explained

The first Grand Theft Auto VI trailer, posted on December 4, 2023, wears the Florida Man meme on its sleeve, right down to the account names. One clip is posted by “PlanetLeonidaMan,” detail 54 in IGN’s breakdown: “Leonida is the GTA version of Florida, and so Leonida Man is a riff on Florida Man, an internet meme about the unusual behaviour exhibited by the state’s locals.”

PC Gamer’s staff summed up the 90 seconds on December 5, 2023 as “several varieties of Florida Man and gator, influencer antics, police knocking down doors, and a prison backstory.” A day later NBC Miami, the network’s local station, wrote that the game was “clearly” drawing on the “‘Florida Man’ and ‘Florida Woman’ archetypes that have made the news and seemingly go viral.”

Eight shots matched to real events

In IGN’s order, each with the outlet that made the link. IGN numbers the details rather than timestamping them.

Trailer shot	Real-world match	Source
A woman dances on the roof of a moving car	a 2017 video shot on the MacArthur Causeway, Miami	NBC Miami
A trapper hauls a gator out of a pool, posted by the POACH account	a scene that is “pretty common down here”	NBC Miami, IGN detail 48
A gator wanders into a gas station, on security camera	“another scene that mimics real life”	IGN, detail 50
A mostly naked man runs from the police	a viral video from 2022	NBC Miami, IGN detail 54
A “We Bite Back in Leonida” T-shirt	another alligator reference	IGN, detail 58
An almost naked old man waters his yard	“just another example of the Florida Man meme”	IGN, detail 62
A woman swings two hammers	a viral video from Chatsworth, Los Angeles	IGN, detail 65
A purple-haired, face-tattooed inmate on Mega Noticias	the “Florida Joker,” Lawrence Sullivan	IGN detail 72, NBC Miami

Creative Bloq ran the same list on December 8, 2023, minus the T-shirt and the runaway: the car-top dancer, “hammer lady,” the garden waterer, both gators and the “Miami Joker.”

The hammer woman is from California

One of the eight is not a Florida story at all. IGN calls it “a direct reference to the viral video of a woman from Chatsworth, Los Angeles,” who went after her neighbor with two hammers. Rockstar Games dropped it into the same feed as Leonida’s gators anyway.

The Florida Joker wants $2 million

The inmate on the Spanish-language newscast borrows the face of Lawrence Sullivan, known online as the “Florida Joker,” whose tattoos copy Jared Leto’s Joker from Suicide Squad. The character’s forehead reads “Impentinent.” On December 10, 2023, Video Games Chronicle reported that Sullivan was asking Rockstar for up to $2 million on TikTok:

“Florida Joker ain’t having that. Ya’ll took my likeness, you took my life.”

VGC’s report carries no response from Rockstar, and no tier 1 or tier 2 outlet has reported a lawsuit.

Memes, three years on

The 2023 trailer leaned into Florida Man; the studio’s 2026 line is warier of memes in general. Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, told IGN on August 27, 2026 that GTA 6’s satire steers clear of memes because “very specific political issues or memes will date fast.” He did not mention Florida Man. What the finished game does with the meme will only show at launch, on November 19, 2026.
