GTA 6 weather: hurricanes, tropical storms and rolling clouds
Rockstar's lighting chief Owen Shepherd walked Game Informer issue 382 through GTA 6's weather on September 29, 2026. Rain falls locally, puddles linger after a storm, wind bends around buildings, and Vice City gets hurricanes.

GTA 6 has localized, persistent weather: it can pour in one spot while the next is sunny, and puddles stay after the storm moves on. Rockstar's Owen Shepherd described it in Game Informer on September 29, 2026, along with fully dynamic clouds, offshore breezes after sunset, tropical storms and hurricanes. The game launches November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
GTA 6 has localized, persistent weather, tropical storms and hurricanes. Owen Shepherd, Rockstar’s vice president of art for lighting and rendering, laid it out in Game Informer issue 382, which went live on September 29, 2026, 51 days before the November 19 launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
“We have re-engineered our weather system to make everything much more localized and persistent, and really wanted the world to feel dynamically solid and achieve a sense of scale we haven’t felt before.”
Eurogamer ties the work back to Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018, and its “heavy winds and even heavier rain.”
Every weather effect Rockstar described
| Effect | What Rockstar described | Reported by |
|---|---|---|
| Clouds | “fully dynamic cloudscapes that roll across the map,” from a clear Miami winter sky to summer cumulonimbus with lightning | VGC, quoting Owen Shepherd |
| Rain | local: you can stay dry in the sun while it pours in a spot you can see | Game Informer |
| After the rain | persistent puddles, wet surfaces, rainbows in the right light | Game Informer, IGN |
| Wind | “offshore breezes after sunset, convectional updrafts, and occlusion from buildings” | Insider Gaming, quoting Owen Shepherd |
| Storms and hurricanes | heavy clouds, strong winds, lots of rain, thunder and lightning | IGN and Eurogamer, quoting Owen Shepherd |
Persistence is the part Game Informer singles out. Drive into a neighborhood after a storm has passed and the puddles and wet pavement tell you it just rained.

Wind reacts to the city, too. In the quote Insider Gaming ran on September 29, Shepherd says “hair and debris will swirl around on roof-tops; gusts of wind will blow ripples over the water surface and bend the grass in swamps.”
Hurricanes in Vice City and beyond
Shepherd’s picture of a big storm, as quoted by Eurogamer: “Heavy clouds, strong winds, dense atmospherics, and a lot of rain combine so that everything is dripping wet, water is gushing off roof edges and lampposts, thunder rumbles and flashes of lightning light up the clouds dramatically.”
How often those storms hit is still open, and Game Informer says so itself: “we don’t know how often these larger, more violent storms occur or how they affect gameplay and storytelling.” Eurogamer asked the follow-ups on September 30, 2026: do wet roads change grip, and what happens to a plane flown into a hurricane? Game Informer ran no video of any of it, so the answers arrive with the game on November 19, 2026.
One number in the coverage needs fixing. IGN wrote on September 29 that the map is “three times larger” than GTA 5’s. In the same Game Informer issue, Rockstar North’s Aaron Garbut puts it at twice the size, as the map size breakdown explains. That is the ground those storms cross, from the Leonida Keys to the Grassrivers wetlands, both covered in the region-by-region map guide.
