GTA 6 side missions: not one has been named yet
With 73 days to go before November 19, 2026, Rockstar Games has named no side mission in GTA 6. What is documented is not a catalogue of quests but a progression rule the studio let the press describe.

Rockstar Games has named no GTA 6 side mission and published no list of them as of September 7, 2026. IGN reported on August 27, 2026 that the flow of main story missions stops at times until the player has raised a certain amount of money, and that the ways to raise it are stealing and reselling cars, robbing stores and running bank heists. Important content is not systematically marked on the map.
Rockstar Games has named no side mission in Grand Theft Auto VI, and published no list of them, with 73 days to go before November 19, 2026. What is documented is not a catalogue of quests but a rule of progression: IGN reported on August 27, 2026, among the details gathered at Rockstar, that the flow of main story missions stops at times until the player has raised a certain amount of money. The optional becomes the condition of the main line.
The same IGN report lists the ways to raise it: stealing cars and selling them on, robbing businesses, holding up stores, running bank heists. So making money is not a sideline to the plot.
Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, put it to IGN on August 27, 2026, describing what the video released that day actually showed:
“Because, yes, the video showcases three pretty action-heavy missions intercut with loads of other things you can do, but in just one little sequence we show a couple of robberies, which represents a huge amount of what you can and need to be doing in this game in between story missions.”
The verb is the tell: “can and need to be doing”, not simply “can do”.
What puts a lead in front of the player
The one documented signposting system is called Focus. It highlights objects and characters of interest, and among them, according to the 69 details IGN published on August 27, 2026 and Dexerto relayed the next day, an opportunity to open a new mission thread. Nothing else has been described.

The rest goes unflagged. Important content is not systematically marked on the map, ComicBook wrote on August 28, 2026 after the previews, and part of the game carries no objective and no icon. The same round-up notes that certain emergent events are built to happen once only, with no second pass.

People carry leads too. Dexerto reported on August 28, 2026 that fences hand out tips on theft opportunities, which makes a fence something other than a resale counter.
What Rockstar has not published
The gap runs wider than the missing list. As of September 7, 2026, five of the fields a player looks for are empty.
| What a player looks for | What Rockstar Games has published as of September 7, 2026 |
|---|---|
| A list of side missions | Nothing |
| The number of main story missions | Nothing |
| The number of chapters and their names | Nothing, though the chapter structure is written into the Ultimate Edition product page of June 24, 2026 |
| The length of the story | Nothing; the 80 hours are Rob Nelson’s own playthrough in February 2026, reported by the New York Times |
| A count of dynamic events | Nothing |
The last row is worth a sentence. A count of dynamic events circulates from retailer listings, and no official source and none of the preview round-ups of August 27 and 28, 2026 carries it. It stays out of this page.
The 80 hours say something about the subject in passing. GamesRadar+ noted on August 27, 2026, relaying the New York Times, that Nelson’s playthrough covered the main story plus “some optional goals with narrative ramifications”. The phrasing belongs to the paper, not to Rockstar, and the figure is not an official length.
Then there is the principle Rockstar claims for itself. IGN wrote, again on August 27, 2026, that the studio says it has blurred the line between open-world activity and story missions, and built the narrative to reward time spent in the world rather than running missions back to back. If that holds up controller in hand, the question of how many side missions GTA 6 has will have no answer, for want of anything to count.
