GTA 6 as a Christmas gift: how to give it on PS5 and Xbox

Grand Theft Auto VI can be given three official ways, one per way of buying it: the boxed code sold in stores, a gift purchase on Microsoft’s storefront, or a PlayStation Store gift card. The game launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, at $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition.

The box holds a code, tied to whoever redeems it

Rockstar’s support page spells it out: the box holds a download code in place of a disc, and it reaches stores on November 12, 2026 so it can be used for the pre-load. Target listed the Standard PS5 box at $79.99 on September 20, 2026, marked “Delivers 11/12/26” and “Playable 11/19/26”, and later prices go into our price tracker. The recipient should redeem the code, because the copy stays with that account afterwards, as explained in what a download code costs you.

PlayStation codes are region-locked. A US box redeems on a PlayStation account from the North America zone, meaning the United States or Canada, and a box bought in the UK stays locked to UK accounts. Rockstar’s advice: “It is recommended that you buy and play from a retailer that is in the country of your platform account to avoid potential activation problems.” For Xbox, the same page needs one line: “Codes purchased are not region-locked.”

On Xbox, Microsoft’s gift button

In the console’s Microsoft Store, the gift wrap icon on a game’s page opens the “Buy as gift” options: a friend from your Xbox list, or an email address. Xbox Wire, Microsoft’s official blog, walked through the process on December 5, 2025 with one condition: “Make sure the person receiving the gift is in the same country as you.” The recipient gets a message on their console and at their account email, then picks “Redeem code”.

That post covers games already on sale. For a GTA 6 pre-order before November 19, none of the Microsoft pages read on September 29, 2026 says whether the gift button appears.

On PS5, a PlayStation Store card

Sony answers “Can I gift games on PlayStation?” with its gift card: “Yes - PlayStation Store gift cards are the go-to way of gifting digital games on PS5, PS5 Pro and PS4.” The same page lists “digital pre-orders” among what a card can pay for. The recipient enters the 12-digit code under Redeem Code, on the console, in the PlayStation App or in a browser.

Bought online, the card goes out as a PDF or by email; bought in a store, it may read “no value until activated at register”, so the cashier has to activate it.

November 20, the cutoff for the bonus pack

Take-Two grants the Vintage Vice City Pack, a 1955 Vapid Stanier with its garage, outfits and a weapon pattern, to any purchase made before November 20, 2026, pre-orders included. A card unwrapped on December 25 and spent that day pays for a purchase five weeks past that cutoff. For the pack to come with the gift, the game itself has to be bought first: as a pre-order, or as a box between November 12 and 19.
