GTA 6 setup: three tiers, from $579.98 to $1,759.97

Starting from nothing, the cheapest way to play Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, 2026 is $579.98: an Xbox Series S 512 GB at $499.99, the US price Microsoft applied on August 1, 2026, plus the Standard edition at $79.99. On a PS5 Digital Edition, the same pair costs $679.98. Everything above that is a trade-off, and part of it buys nothing.

What sets this budget is not the price of the boxes, but a remark by Rob Nelson, co-director of Rockstar North, reported on August 27, 2026 by Brazilian creator Davy Jones and carried by Kotaku: console builds run at 30 frames per second at this stage of development. Rockstar Games has published nothing of its own on frame rate, and Nelson said he would have to check with the technical team. Digital Foundry called a 60fps version “extremely unlikely on console hardware” on August 28, 2026. That is one frame every 33.3 ms, and it deletes several lines from the shopping list. One catch, a real one. Of the 512 GB on the box, a June 29, 2026 estimate from Stealthy Gaming puts about 364 GB in reach, and Rockstar has published no install size for GTA 6 on any platform.

Console and game alone come to $679.98. The Extended Look was captured on a base PS5, Sony’s June 24, 2026 post attaches four hardware features to the game, from DualSense haptics to Tempest 3D audio, and no other machine has been shown running it. The drive is optional.

The $300 between a PS5 Pro and a PS5 Digital Edition does not buy fluidity. Digital Foundry wrote on June 29, 2026 that the Pro gains only a fraction on the CPU, its lead coming from the GPU, ray tracing acceleration and PSSR, its AI upscaler, none of which hands back the CPU time a 16.7 ms frame needs.

Three lines carry no US reading here: a television, a headset, a controller. The August 2026 European prices sit in the French edition, and converting them would give a number no American reader could check in a store. The model question belongs in our TV guide.

Storage stays open too. A launch PS5 leaves roughly 667 GB free, per Frandroid’s guide updated August 26, 2026, and its M.2 slot takes any NVMe PCIe 4.0 drive meeting Sony’s criteria: 5,500 MB/s sequential read recommended, heatsink mandatory, 250 GB to 8 TB. Our storage guide does the arithmetic.

What not to buy

The disc drive, in any of its forms. Rockstar states on its store page that a physical copy holds a download code for the November 12 pre-load, nothing else: “A disc will not be included in the box.” The $50 between a PS5 Digital Edition at $599.99 and a PS5 with a drive at $649.99 buys nothing, and neither does the $50 between the two Xbox Series X, at $749.99 and $799.99.

Nor a panel bought for its refresh rate. The PS5’s VRR window, which lets the screen follow the game’s pace, runs from 48 to 120 Hz, and at 30 frames per second only Low Framerate Compensation catches it, by repeating each frame on a natively 120 Hz screen.

And a PS5 Pro bought for frame rate, since Nelson’s remark covers it like the others.

The 8 TB licensed SSD, listed at $2,959.99 by Notebookcheck on June 17, 2026, for a slot that takes a cheaper drive: licensing does not make it faster, Games.gg wrote on June 18, 2026. Microsoft explained the prices on June 25, 2026: “console storage and memory prices have increased by more than 2.5x and we expect another doubling by the fall of 2027”.

And the bigger screen bought to smooth the picture. Digital Foundry’s August 28 read puts internal rendering around 1440p on PS5, stretched to 4K with no reconstruction, with aliasing and shimmering on fine detail. A larger, sharper panel makes those easier to see, not harder.
