GTA 6 cut its fridge restocking system, Rob Nelson says

GTA6 LIFE
Rockstar built and then dropped a GTA 6 system that let players buy groceries at a store, carry them home and restock the fridge in a hideout. Rob Nelson told Famitsu, in an interview published on August 28, 2026, that it complicated the mechanics too much. What stayed is the body tracking behind it: a gym with three exercises a day, and food that buffs your gauges.

Rockstar North wrote the specs for grocery stores where Jason and Lucia could buy food, take it home and refill the fridge in their hideout, then cut the whole thing. Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head, said so to Famitsu, which published the exclusive interview on August 28, 2026.
At one point during development, we were experimenting with a system that would allow you to buy groceries to restock the fridge. We had specifications for stores with groceries that you could buy and take home, and the fridge could be replenished. However, because this would have complicated the mechanics, we had to simplify it.
Famitsu runs the interview in Japanese, so those are GamesRadar’s words rather than Nelson’s: the outlet published its English translation on August 30, 2026. Nelson points to Red Dead Redemption 2, where the team argued over the same line.
We are always trying to find the right balance between realism and ease of play. Rather than just going to the fridge to grab a snack or visiting a restaurant just to roleplay, we want to give meaning to each action.
What the studio kept instead
The body tracking survived, and Famitsu carries a level of detail the English write-ups skipped. The game keeps counters the magazine renders as physical strength level, cardio level and fitness level, and those are what bulk the character up or let a heavy eater put on weight. Rockstar had described the principle to Dazed on August 26, 2026, without naming the three counters: bodies change with lifestyle.
The gym itself is a minigame with a stated rulebook. Stamina drains for as long as you keep moving, and the set has to be finished before the bar empties. Move too fast and the body takes extra load. A training day runs to three exercises and then a rest, and three days in a row raise the character’s stamina and strength. Most of the equipment can be used, pull-ups included, and the session ends on a protein shake and a protein bar, one entry among everything else there is to do.
Eating still pays for Jason and Lucia, with a ceiling. Food buffs the gauges, an energy drink pushes the stamina bar higher, and training raises the base values for stamina and health. Let health fall back below its normal cap and the buffed surplus is gone, with no regeneration past that point.
Nelson does not say when in development the grocery system went, nor whether food stores remain places you can walk into. Refuelling came out of the same argument alive: PC Gamer reported on September 5, 2026 that he defends a roughly ten-second animation.
