GTA 6 fishing is catch and release only, Rob Nelson says
Rockstar Games wrote the word fishing once, on May 6, 2025, in its Mount Kalaga blurb. Rob Nelson filled in the rest on September 3, 2026: fishing in GTA 6 is catch and release, because 'It didn't fit this game.'

Fishing in GTA 6 is catch and release only, and no fish can be kept, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson said on September 3, 2026. He described it as entertainment, with fishing challenges and collectibles attached. Rockstar Games has named a single fishing location, Gambit Bay, and not one fish species.
Fishing in Grand Theft Auto VI is catch and release, and players keep nothing they pull out of the water. Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, said so to YouTuber TGG in an interview reported by GameSpot on September 3, 2026, with 73 days left before the November 19, 2026 launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. His reason was four words long: “It didn’t fit this game.”
Rockstar Games has printed the word fishing exactly once. It sits on the Only in Leonida page, published on May 6, 2025 alongside the second trailer, inside the blurb for Mount Kalaga National Park: “A national landmark up against the state’s northern border, Mount Kalaga offers prime hunting, fishing, and off-road trails.” That is an enumeration of three activities, with nothing about how any of them plays.

Everything else comes from footage. GTA BOOM files fishing among the twenty free roam activity categories it counted in “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look”, the 26 minutes and 48 seconds shown on August 27, 2026 and broken down in our guide to what there is to do. The activity montage runs it together with kayaking, base jumping, scuba diving and jet skiing, then the airboat in the Grassrivers wetlands, a shot Game Informer places around the 17:10 mark. The closing montage of the video opens on a fishing boat, per Engadget.
Why the fish are not for eating
Red Dead Redemption 2, released in 2018 and set in 1899, let players land a wide assortment of fish and then cook and eat them. GameSpot draws the line at the period: in a present-day setting, Jason and Lucia can buy food on any corner, which an 1899 angler could not.
Eating carries its own consequence in GTA 6. Food adds weight, and surplus calories convert into muscle at the gym. Fish stay outside that loop. Nelson frames the activity as entertainment, with fishing challenges to clear and collectibles to gather, though he names none of them.
Where the water is, and the only spot Rockstar names
Four places have a Rockstar sentence attached, three of them from the Only in Leonida page of May 6, 2025 and the fourth from a storefront listing.
| Place | What Rockstar writes about it |
|---|---|
| Mount Kalaga National Park | “Prime hunting, fishing, and off-road trails”, up against the state’s northern border |
| Leonida Keys | “Some of the most beautiful and dangerous waters in all of America”, on the archipelago’s doorstep |
| Grassrivers | “You never know what lies beneath the surface”, among gators and mangroves |
| Gambit Bay | The Ultimate Edition’s Shitzu Squalo is sold as a way to fish it |
Gambit Bay is the only fishing location named so far, and it does not come from a gameplay description. The Ultimate Edition Upgrade listing on the Microsoft Store moors the Shitzu Squalo, a pink and blue watercraft, at Washington Beach, and pitches it for fishing at Gambit Bay. Where that bay sits on the Vice City map is anyone’s guess, because Rockstar has never published a map of Leonida.

The same upgrade drops a Crest Kayak into Jason’s safehouse vehicles, next to a Dinka Enduro motorcycle. That kayak earns its place. Nelson lists kayaking to IGN on August 27, 2026 among the activities that raise the couple’s relationship meter, alongside pool and mini golf, a system covered in our guide to the Jason and Lucia bond.
Then there is what nobody has published: not one fish species, not one line about tackle. No reward has been quantified either, and nothing suggests fishing pays. Nelson gives that job to hunting, which unlocks through a friend of Jason’s, a character TGG believes has appeared in no footage released to date.
One system covers fishing and hunting alike. Fish and animals can be inspected, a gesture lifted from Red Dead Redemption 2, and KeenGamer noted on August 28, 2026 that studying an animal feeds a compendium. Dogs fall under the same system, with two options on top: petting and scolding.
