GTA 6 dismemberment is not new, the ESRB noted it in GTA 5

Dismemberment would not be new to GTA 6. Polygon wrote on August 31, 2026 that the game introduces it for the first time, citing the Extended Look of August 27, 2026 and a preview by YouTuber ElRubiusOMG. The ESRB rating summary for Grand Theft Auto V, a game released on September 17, 2013, already states that it contains rare depictions of dismemberment.
GTA 6 will not be the first Grand Theft Auto with dismemberment in it. Polygon published a piece on August 31, 2026, headlined “GTA 6 Is Officially the Bloodiest GTA Game Yet,” which treats the mechanic as something the November 19, 2026 release brings to the series. The ESRB rating summary for Grand Theft Auto V settles that in one sentence.
Blood-splatter effects occur frequently, and the game contains rare depictions of dismemberment.
Grand Theft Auto V shipped on September 17, 2013 and carries seven ESRB content descriptors, Blood and Gore and Intense Violence among them.
What Polygon actually watched comes down to two moments in the Extended Look, the 26 minute 48 second Netflix broadcast of August 27, 2026. Jason shoots an enemy in the face with a shotgun, the game slows down, and the pellets tear away chunks of the man’s face. Later, Lucia is slammed into a wall hard enough to leave a blood spatter, then ends the fight by driving one of her heels into her attacker’s eye.
For the severed head, Polygon points to a 23 minute video by YouTuber ElRubiusOMG, who says he saw it during a Rockstar preview session. Polygon also leans on leaked footage, which is neither described nor linked here. Rockstar Games has published nothing on the subject.
The word “officially” carries the second problem. On August 28, 2026, the public ESRB database returned no entry for Grand Theft Auto VI, the PEGI database returned none either, and the six official storefronts checked that day all served an empty descriptor table. Nothing is official yet because nothing has been rated.
The same game hands you ways not to kill
Polygon flags a suppressive fire option that deliberately misses in the same piece. IGN listed more on August 27, 2026, after its visit to Rockstar HQ: a shot to the arm or leg takes an enemy out of the fight without killing them, an accurate shot knocks the gun out of their hands, and pointing a weapon at a bystander is sometimes enough to send them running. The Criminal Profile counts unnecessary violence against the player.
Rockstar has never said whether GTA 6 holds a sequence comparable to the GTA V torture scene, which the ESRB describes line by line in that same summary. Boxed copies reach shelves on November 12, 2026, and no date has been announced for the final ratings.
