Is GTA 6 free? The real price and the free-download scams

No, GTA 6 is not free. Take-Two priced it at $79.99, or $99.99 for the Ultimate, ahead of the November 19, 2026 launch, and every site offering a free download, a free key or a leaked copy is a scam.

: Added the GTA 6 price on PC, with Strauss Zelnick's September 17, 2026 answer and the Red Dead Redemption 2 precedent.

There is no free version, no demo and no free-to-play tier. Any page promising GTA 6 for free, a free key or early access is fake, and often installs malware.

No, GTA 6 is not free. Grand Theft Auto VI is a paid game, sold at $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate, launching on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. This page answers in three parts: the official price, why the question keeps coming up, and how to spot the fake offers.

The official price

Is GTA 6 free?

No. Take-Two set the price on June 24, 2026, the day before pre-orders opened: $79.99 for the Standard, $99.99 for the Ultimate. The game ships on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, described in the announcement as “a single-player experience” at launch. (Level 1, Take-Two)

What does it actually cost?

Two editions, and no free trial version. IGN notes a $10 jump over the $70 standard of this console generation, and Polygon points out that the boxed copy is a download code, not a disc. TechRadar lists the same $79.99 and $99.99 in the US, with the Standard set higher at AU$129.95 in Australia. (Level 2, IGN, Polygon and TechRadar)

Edition US price Contents
Standard $79.99 The game
Ultimate $99.99 The game plus the Ultimate Edition Upgrade

What is the GTA 6 price on PC?

There is none yet: no PC version has been announced to date, and the $79.99 price covers PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. At Take-Two’s shareholder meeting on September 17, 2026, Strauss Zelnick noted only that “the PC platform is becoming more and more important to our company over time,” without naming GTA 6, IGN reported. Red Dead Redemption 2 reached PC on November 5, 2019, 12 months and 10 days after consoles. Where the PC version stands.

The free month of GTA+ isn’t a free game?

No. The only thing given with a digital pre-order is “a free month of GTA+,” one month of the GTA+ subscription, as Take-Two’s June 24, 2026 announcement puts it. It is a perk tied to a paid purchase, and GTA+ costs money after that month. (Level 1, Take-Two)

No Game Pass or PS Plus at launch

Will GTA 6 hit a subscription on day one?

No. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has called putting a full-price new game into a subscription on day one “a lost opportunity for the publisher,” and told GamesIndustry.biz the services would not “affect our decisions” because those decisions are rational. Take-Two keeps subscriptions for older games, so GTA 6 will not launch day one on Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Plus. (Level 2, Metro and Digital Trends)

Why the question keeps coming up: GTA V really was free

Wasn’t GTA V given away for free?

It was, but that was the previous game, back in 2020. Grand Theft Auto V was free on the Epic Games Store from May 14 to 21, 2020, and the rush took the store down for hours. Anyone who claimed it kept it for good, and the game had already sold more than 100 million copies since 2013. (Level 2, BBC and Variety)

And GTA Online free on PS5?

Yes, once and for a limited window. The standalone version of GTA Online was free on PS5 from March 15 to June 14, 2022, to download and keep. Rockstar announced it on March 4, 2022, noting that a PlayStation Plus subscription was still required to play online. It was not the whole of GTA V, and those offers are closed. The fake “GTA 6 for free” offers

Is there a free demo or PC download?

No, and it is a trap. On August 24, 2026 Malwarebytes documented fake sites dressed as Rockstar whose “Play Now” button downloads gta6_installer.exe, a 1.1 megabyte file that installs the Vidar infostealer. Chrome and more than 40 antivirus engines flag it as malicious, PCMag reports, and the word “demo” in the address (gta6demo[.]us, for one) is enough to spot the fake. The full breakdown. (Level 2, Malwarebytes and PCMag)

What about cheap “leaked copies” or “early access”?

Fake as well. On September 1, 2026 Malwarebytes described a fake countdown site selling a supposed copy of GTA 6 for $50, or 1 SOL (about $102), which instead drains the victim’s crypto wallet across seven blockchain networks. Nobody is selling a playable copy of GTA 6 yet, and Rockstar never asks you to connect a crypto wallet. (Level 2, Malwarebytes)

How do you spot a fake offer in one line?

No playable build of GTA 6 is circulating legitimately, no PC version has been announced, and TechRepublic sums it up: “There is no legitimate GTA 6 demo.” When a “game” asks you to disable your antivirus, pay in crypto or connect a wallet, the file is the problem. How to spot a fake leak. (Level 2, TechRepublic)
